OK, I have been following message boards for about a year and a half now and have a question. This year, every board that I check talks alot about carp. Some more then others but all have a healthy dose of yapping concerning this wonderful fish.
Last year on Hawk-talk, there have been some discussions about carp but not as much as this one.
My question(s), has there always been this much talk about carp or are they getting popular all of a sudden?? There is a point in saying that since Hawk-Talk is growing, more poeple=different discussions but viewing the archives in other message boards, this year seems to stand out regarding this topic.
If there is a greater interest in this fish, could it be due to the fact that now there are more TV shows featuring them??? Shimano pushing the industry with their new carp-based line of rods???
Maybe I have always been in left field and should take my head out of the sand and smell the boilies???
Just curious,
Manny

You're right in that there is more discussion this year than last.. perhaps a few more people are getting out there and giving it a go.. perhaps people who have joined the board in the past year have always gone but now we're hearing about it.
I personally used to fish for carp 90% of the time but over the past couple of years i've started to target crappie, carp, pike, muskie, walleye and this year bass too !
We have some excellent world class fishing around here and i think people are starting to realise it... Guys coming over here to fish for carp from other countires and dropping $1200 a week to fish
we can go and do the same for next to nothing.
Shimmano is starting to push their line of carp gear a lot more now in north america but they're not new to it they've been doing it for 15 odd years in europe and japan.
I think more people are giving it a go and finding out that perhaps these fish have been given a bad reputation... you don't have to spend $10k to get started, they're probably not great to eat but that is insignificant when they finally hook one and it takes a 30 yard run and takes 15 mins to land. Kids love it when all they have ever fished for is crappie and perch... imagine them landing a 15lber compared to a 6" sunfish.

Unlike Don Cherry, I have no issue with the number of Europeans we have playing over hear. And it is bringing light to one of the least exploited and abundant fishing resources we have in the area.
North America has a love affair with bass. We can thank our southern friends for that I'm sure. But to see the size of carp coming out of our rivers, and seeing that young and old can catch them fairly easily ...
well, who doesn't want to hook into a 10+ pound fish?
I'm still trying to find an easy access spot around Rockland so I can drag out my kids. After seeing the smiles on Haillee and Jonathan, I am the worst dad ever.

!st for M.T,A friend of mine said that the slow water @ Petrie was holding a load of carp on Sat,I havent had the chance to look yet but if it is so I will let you know for sure!Other than there my closest spot would be the Billings and Bronson area of the rideau system,in the weedy areas there by this time of year will hold good #'s and size of the gold monsters. If you need anyhelp to find them in the city shoot me a message and I'll give you directions.
2nd for slushpuppy,You may use your bass rod but try not to horse them in on a shorter rod,for these fish are a real powerful opponent!Loosen your drag up more than the norm for they make very hard runs away from you.For bait the best and easiest to try is sweet canned kernal corn,Afew kernnal's on a small #6 or 8 hook and let it sit on or very close to bottom. The key to turning these fish on a bite is to chum the water,And corn is a cost efective way to toss out a few handfulls and sit your bait in the middle of your chummed area.Worms will work dough balls just a piece of white or brown bread mushed onto your hook(not the crust though)Also you can try a search engine for carp baits that will give you a few ideas to make your own baits up at home.
Hope this helps you both and anything else I will offer my best to help!!!
