What line is suggested

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What line is suggested

Post by Jimmy_1 »

I have been trying to find some info on-line and from my local tackle stores. Seems nobody is really 100% certain on the best approach....

I'll throw it out there.

I have 2 9ft trolling rods with Shimano reels. I want to know what is the best line to put on them for trolling lakers and walleye. The "and" being the operative word! Meaning it has to be a good line for both.

Some suggestions I have had is to use 30lb braid with an 18" 20 lb mono leader to spool the whole thing with 20-30 lb mono line.....

What do people suggest? If you do not wish to share it publicly by all means PM me.

Not looking for lure suggestions, spots, techniques etc. Just line.

Thanks!

I have 2 Abu line counter reels which i spool with 17 lb Mono. on 8 ft rods. Use them for salmon and walleye fishing off of downrigger and planer board. I find the stretchability in the mono works for me.
There will no doubt be different opinions from many folks but that is what I use and have had reasonable success over the years. A 9 foot rod should take most of the strain off of the line and I think 30 lb is a bit of overkill, like using a winch.

Just my thoughts.

PLINE XLL 15lbs is what I use on my eye trolling rod and I like it. Ends up that it's very close to the 10lbs mono for the Trolling bible specs.!!!! Or was it CXLL???

It makes a difference if this is for inland lakers and walleyes or say Lake O lakers and Quinte eyes....

For inland....10 pound is more than enough...

For the other 15 is plenty...

Mono only on 90% of all my reels...

Thanks RJ,

In-land only. I'll be using my 14ft tinner to troll. I do not want to go on Lake O or Quinte with it. (I know it is do-able).

I plan to go into Quebec in the in-land lakes.

My wife picked me up some 15lb cx p-line. It has the 15lb strength and the diameter of 10lb mono. So for me it is win-win.....

Now lets go fishin!!!

I am trying 10lb P-line fluorocarbon this year.

Fluorocarbon sinks.
Lower stretch than mono.
Thinner diameter (=can get down deeper).

If I don't like that I also have some P-line fluoroclear and Yo-Zuri hybrid that I am putting on my other rods to try out. I will also have some Trilene XT and Maxx mono as backup since that is what I often use.

All are spinning combos.

Hope the P-line CXX works out for ya!! I recall reading that some people thought it had too much memory, but I have never tried it.

For Lake Ontario I use 20 lb. Cortland Flea Flicker, looks terrible on the reel but does an awesome job on the spiny water flea come the summer months. Use a flourocarbon leader.

For inland lakes I agree with RJ, keep it light. 10 to 12 lb. Seaguar Flourocarbon. Does make a difference.

Just my nickels worth.

Thanks Billy I appreciate it.

I went with the CX Premium. I'm pretty much good to go now.
Hopefully (fingers crossed) I do well in 2 weeks.

I managed to convince my brother to come out with me
Him being totally not into fishing (very urban) this should be interesting...
