The last time I ever saw a Pike with a purplish haze was in Britain. They refer to them there as Grass Pike. They didn't get as big as your garden variety Northern either.
I caught one as a kid, and put it in the Irish neighbours goldfish pond. Hey, she said it was ok. Two weeks later, no more goldfish... Who knew?
I actually always catch a few on opening day. I fish near a place that has rapids for walleye and often catch these purplelish pike. They just seem to lose their colors or so. And there is a big difference between blue walleye and these pikes that Slushpuppy mentioned.
Pike have a variety of color patterns as do other species of fish. I've caught them anywhere from black/green to gold /green to purple/white and the standard green/white.Smallmouth bass will range from green/black to brown/gold and almost total black color. Muskie have a brown/black brown/gold green/gold and a silver color variation. I undestand that the reason for this is differences in the environment of the water body to distinct population genetics.

Yes. yes, yes... the purple pike. I too have been fortunate enough to see one caught. Just last year a friend and I were fishing in Clute @ Floods Landing on the Abitibi River outside of Cochrane. He did catch one of these colourful snot rockets.
And, two weekends back another friend caught a blue walleye on the mighty Moose River. He did not know they existed until that day. Beauty.
