Back at the Gouin

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Back at the Gouin

Post by McQ »

I'm back at Nemio http://www.nemio.com for another bit of time with a twist this year. Ronnie launched his snow machine off a hidden rock out on one of the big bays and suffered a few cracked ribs and a broken collar bone. With all that physical damage he managed to walk and crawl 4 KM to the Indian village for help, was driven 25 KM back here to the lodge on the back of a Ski Doo and did his best to tough it through overnight while arrangements were made to get him out by ambulance to Parent where his father was to pick him up. With the assistance of medical personel from the CLSC who came over from the reservation he was evaluated wrapped up and slinged in preparation for a 20 KM ride on a snow machine to meet the ambulance. Everything went well, arrived in Parent, his dad drove him to the emergency room in Mont Laurier where he was checked out and they then proceeded to Gatineau.

All wrapped up he is on his way to Pittsburg for the show - "One Tough Bird".

The new house is very comfortable, warm and well equipped, I have all the city conveniences imaginable. Just brought in a load of wood, changed the oil in the small generator, will spend a few hours this afternoon filling up the water reservoir and will be good to go for a week.

Wolfe, I have a camera this year (not my own) so once I figure out how to download some pics I'll send along some of the reasons I am so taken with this place.

I do have another snow machine this year so will be able to get in some touring and a bit of fishing hopefully.

See y'all tomorrow

Very cool. I'll have my eyes peeled for another report.

Some friends and I are hoping to make a trip down to the Gouin this summer!

Good to see you back Bill.
Too bad about Ron. He is one tough irishman.
I imagine Rosie is quite upset.
Let me know how the fishing through the ice goes. Might be heading that way next month for a visit.
Have a blast and take care.

Bill:

Glad to read that you made the trip into Nemio's safely. Too bad about Ronnie's accident. I'll look forward to reading your daily reports. Perhaps you can report something to help out with cabin fever. Give the dog a pat for me.

Spent the day yesterday chasing a problem with the generator - thought I had water in the gas - nope, after many attempts restarting every 10 minutes I gave up for the evening, hooked up the small job and watched the end of the Daytona 500 - what a surprise from Jamie McMurray.

Anyway, this morning at dawn found me in the shop pondering what the problem may be and realized that after Ronnie's accident all the schedules were botched up, including the routine oil change. so I changed the oil and as you can tell I'm back in business - turns out there is a sensor on the unit and when the oil level drops it shuts down. What you learn by slowing down and really assessing what the issue is - puts you on the right track.

Ron & Rosie have left for Pittsburg and I expect them back next Wednesday

Hope this is the end of problems.

Will replenish my water supply this afternoon, pumping will take about 4 hours, taking care of daylight.

On the nature scene there's a partridge roosting about 30' up in the big birch which I spent 15 minutes watching through the front window as it performed a wake up ritual as the sun rose - PEACEFUL.

It's great to see the Olympic Team starting to rack up a few medals, wonderful to have satelite access.

Dan, it would be nice to see you if you can put things together and you're right about Rosie. I'll still be here.

Jay, I'll do my best to reduce the walleye population.

See y'all tomorrow

McQ,

just saw this post tonight and was happy to hear you're back up in God's Country. :D

That's pretty scary about Ronnie's freak accident and sorry to hear he's banged up pretty badly. Apparently he's got a good supply of "true grit" to get himself help like he did! I'm glad to learn he is safe and on the mend. What's this "Tough Bird" show you mentioned? I would say Ronnie qualifies!

I'm definitely looking forward to your pictures and hope you'll keep an eye out for some good wildlife willing to pose.

Be safe... and enjoy your solitude and peaceful escape. What an opportunity.

Got sidetracked yesterday by the Olympics, silver in the snow cross - not bad but the prelims were just too long. Took an hour this morning to set up the system for pumping water to the reservoir, everything is really moving along well today. Will have to troubleshoot the medium generator today and see if I can get it back on line.

Looks like 3 days of high temps coming up, guess I'll have to put all the freezers on the grid. Glad the big generator is running.

Wolfe, Ronnie is a tough bird - checked out the site where he hit the rock, seems he flew about 60' and rolled for another 30. The machines a sorry looking mess, one of the guys from the rez towed it in and two others brought me 40 gallons of drinking water - good folks Our conversations are too funny as I try out my meager french but we all seem to eventually understand each other. I'm in the new house Ron built this year - not on the site yet, quite comfortable if I can repeat myself.

See y'all tomorrow

Got a 6" dump of snow overnight and the system is forecast to be around for a few days, it's a good thing because there was only a couple of feet so far - much more is needed for the spring runoff.

500 gallons of water in the reservoir, 50 gallons of gas on hand for the generator, cleaned up the house (animal hair balls, boy the two cats and the dog do leave their presence). A couple of loads of wood to haul in, shovel 100' of pathway and I'm going to chase down the problem with the middle generator. This mild weather means putting the big freezers on line and I need it if I want to stay connected to the satellite.

Watching the Ottawa news this morning and the Queensway traffic crawl really brings home just how good it is up here. It lead me to start thinking about my youth and how my mother & father coped with a kitchen wood stove not only for cooking but heating water in a side jacket and the house in the early days. We didn't have a furnace until 1951 and it was wood & coal back then, a central grate let the heat filter throughout the modest two story. As I'm sitting here typing away in my bare feet I can recall how quickly we slid into our wool socks and got dressed in a flash back then, running downstairs for a hot bowl of oatmeal. BRRRR

It's truly heaven up here but simulating the city grid takes hours every day and being alone requires extra caution.

The partridge is still roosting out front and the morning antics are captivating; great way to slowly wake up myself as I sip my coffee.

Time to go to work - see ya tomorrow.

Great to hear from you MQ.

I remember those great old Woodstoves in the kitchen, we had one at our winter camp and first thing in the morning I would open the oven door stick my feet on the opened door to warm them up real good, then got dressed and went skidooing for a few hours until my Dad woke up then had breakfast then it was back on the skidoo. I used to go thru about 20 gallons of gas in a weekend and that was with a 15hp Olympique. Everytime I see one of those woodstoves I remenisce of the good old days.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

If you can't stand behind our troops,
Please feel free to stand in front of them!!!

Another day in paradise, got #2 generator up and running - the problem was in the choke mechanism - simple fix but some time to find. Good thing, had to keep the big freezer cold, temp climbed to 2+.

No partridge this morning so a solitary cup of coffee, reloaded the wood pile and now am ready for a feed of bacon & eggs. Will need the energy today. Yesterdays wet snow combined with accumulation requires a bit of roof clearing on all the buildings - that's 9 roofs - total area about 7,000 sq ft. will have to rig a harness then at it. It's amazing what this beat up 66 year old body can still do.

Maybe I'll be able to make a run down to Lake Nemio tomorrow for a bit of fishing. The season is still closed here on the Gouin until Mar 1.

Wolfe, I'm still working on the photo deal - once I get time to figure out the software they'll be posted.

See ya tomorrow.

Grizzly Adams McQ,

I think it's awesome that you're having this unique experience, but hope you're careful on those snowy rooftops. You're not Santa, after all, with magic powers to get you up and down. Gravity would do the job well enough, at least going DOWN. Take care!

I was just thinking: where are those McQ pictures? Then I read your comment. I will practice some deep breathing techniques to attempt more patience.

Seriously, looking forward to seeing some of the cool stuff you're experiencing.

Enjoy your solitary experience!
