2005 Merc 115 4 stroke saltwater

Post by fishboch »

Hi,

I'm looking at a boat that has a Merc 115hp 4 stroke saltwater motor on it. I'm wondering if any of you guys out there own or have experience with this year class and style of engine. My neighbour says they have known problems and they are part Merc and part Yamaha.

Would like to hear about your experiences before I make the big leap.

Appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Paul.

i know some of the old small mercs had yamaha parts 15-25 hp.,old 80's 90's 115 yams had junk powerheads but had merc midsections and l/u's, all modern mercs under 50 hp are tohatsu,i would guess that your 115 may be a tohatsu, which are a great 115 4 stroke.

I have an 2006 115 4 stroke Merc and have 0 issues with it.

This is how I understand the Merc and Yam situation. Yam supplied the 4 stroke technology to Merc until 2006 and Merc put on their lower ends on them. In 2007 Merc was up to speed and started building their own 4 strokes.

I bought my boat in 2007 but made sure I had a 2006 motor. If I would have had the option I would have bought a Yamaha motor.

If you're only concern is the dual parts on them. You're ahead of the game in my opinion. They're a solid motor.
