With the cooler nights we've been having I decided to get out and see if crappies have started to move up into shallower water. I was able to get out to a smaller lake in the Lanark area in the afternoon on Labour Day. It was windier than I had expected, so was a bit limited to where I could fish from my canoe, but was able to get to a few spots where I've had success in the past.
I have better luck with crappie closer to sunset, so I spent the first hour or so searching for pike. I don't target pike often and don't really have the right gear for them, but managed to get a small one on a size 3 Blue Fox spinner.
After that I switched to targeting crappie. My setup was smallish minnows on a #6 octopus hook and splitshot sinker set around 3 to 4 feet below a slip bobber. I managed to find a few crappies (and bluegills) in about 8 feet of water just off of a weed bed. Didn't catch anything big, the largest being only 8.5", but I know this lake holds 13+ inchers, so I'll be out to give it another try in a couple weeks.
Didn't take any photos, but have some gopro footage from the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFbqBHm0-nA
Happy fishing!

Re: Lanark County Pike and Crappie
Thanks Jim! I'll try to post another report next time I get out. Hopefully a walleye outing in the next couple of weeks and then a go for crappie again.
