Monday Aylmer Island Ottawa River

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Monday Aylmer Island Ottawa River

Post by Leakyboot »

Haven't posted a report in a while. I've lost more great Smallies in the past few outings than I can bear. Some inches from being lipped and others a rod' s length off the boat. These long distance releases make it hard to get pics. I am sure I've had at least two in the four and a half lb. range slip away from me. I've been fishing a lot of topwater. For a while, the pike kept stealing my topwater plugs. 40 lb.flourocarbon fixed that.

I stayed around Aylmer Island all day, Things were strangely quiet early in the day. Around 8:00 things picked up nicely, though. When the sun got high, I tried a little jigging in the deeper water. I hit one large Smallie that way. I lost him after a jump or two. I only fish barbless jigs. So, you will lose some occasionaly. It was high noon when I noticed action up on the reefs. So, I tried the topwater around the edges. Nailed a beauty there and several other smaller ones in the next hour.

The pics tell the story. This isn't the best camera. All, except the sauger, came on the same topwater lure. Some average and some better than average Smallies.

It seemed the clouds had settled on the water.
