Whiskey Lake Lake Trout Fishin pt.2

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Whiskey Lake Lake Trout Fishin pt.2

Post by Laketrout »

Left St.Catharines May 28th and headed to the Toronto airport to pick up my friend for his first trip to Canada,I returned home on June 7th. I stopped a Grimbys tackel and fixed a safety concern Big-O had about my boat having only one D.Rigger,I didn't install it this trip, but will have the safety concern looked after on my next trip. Thanks Big_O the wife believed it
We arrived @ Redwood lodge 8pm, on the way Pete wanted to try his Sat. phone so we stopped here @ one of the lakes u drive around on the 50 miles of dirt roads.

That night we launched the HMCS Avro Arrow and sat on a flat calm lake till after midnight,he's never heard a loon or a moose calling,he got to here both that night.
The next mornin we were up early, someone forgot to close the back door and there was frost on the wind shield, after a brief diccussion on breakfest we grabed the beer and headed out. Pete lost his first fish, after that he had 2 in the boat 1 released one eaten, his never had LT before.

As we came in around noon on our first day,the camp owner was waiting for us,a quick scan of the night before and both decided we weren't in trouble
Pete's father was very sick and had passed away that mornin. So we decided it wasn't a good idea to head to the airport that day. Pete wanted to go fishin his father was a big fishermen and was thrilled when Pete told him he was going to Canada Fishin.
We restocked and headed back out fishin. Pete got his 2nd fish of the day.
I took him up to the falls that lead into the lake and was thrilled to say the least.
Sunday mornin we left Whiskey Lake and headed to the Toronto airport, dropped him off at 1pm and headed wayyyyy back up to the lake.
The next mornin I got a 5lb LT and a few 3lbers. All toll for the week 20 in the boat all released but 3 the biggest a 10lber.
Water temp leveled off from my first trip,at 50-55 F. I was fishing in 40fow down 25-35. Had 1 hit, I popped the rod and as it was coming up I had a slight hit, many times I'd hook them after I popped the rod. So as I ran my 30' of line out I was hooking it to the rigger when he hit,the line burnt my hand as I set the hook :D

Hi Brian; Its nice to see you posting again. You probably would like still to be North but welcome back. Great to see such wonderful pics. Sorry that your friend wasn't able to complete the whole trip. I'm sure that he enjoyed the time that he did have with you. There's nothing like the Canadian north.
How did those new lures work ? Is the Williams still the best catcher or did something else catch the lakers eye? Keep in touch.

Hey there Old Guy
Yes my friend was very disappointed on only staying a day. The Williams is my lure of choice when fisin LT. However in early spring I will use reefrunners off of planner boards like we were doing for Salmon.
However with my friend onboard I had one DRigger with the williams and the the manuld DRigger with a reefrunnermdid catch a fish with it though.
Do you still plan on Joining me on May 21 for a week or so?? Hay lake then off to whiskey!!

Big-O
Love that. Or this fall you and your buddy could come down to fish the Niagara Bar for Steelies,Salmon,Lake Trout and Brown. I have a big house lots of spare rooms.

About the new D.Rigger
It was almost my main DRigger. I invited the lodge owner out fishin one night. He wanted to use leadcore, and run close to shore. First he said we were going to slow,1.9 on the GPS was to slow, then when we were fishin to deep of water,he wanted to drive,I had the shallow alarm set at 30 feet I was down 28. This frigging idiot, when into the menu and turned the alarm off,I heard something theres my DRigger bouncing and the clutch was letting line out. I got us stopped and used the Drigger to back up,the the weight released off of bottom. I asked him how deeo we were his reply was 24 feet,I asked what about the alarm he said he turned it off,and then he said he wasn't paying attention to the depth,I blew!!
The deck didn't crack, but I got two bolt heads that have been half way pulled through the base plate.
I told him that it could have ripped out and over board, his reply will it's a poor design then.
This ^& never said he was sorry.
End of Rant:x

Yes my good man. I'm counting the days. It should be a great week or so. Looking forward to some great fishing and hopefully some catching as well. You got some great looking lakers from Whiskey lake.
I've been fishing from my canoe in the Welland River and picking up a few pan fish and some grass pike.

Hey LT, Those are some healthy looking lakers. Their color is much darker than the ones we were getting at the bar. Was the meat a deep orange?

Beautiful looking lake.

Oh yes,it's almost a pink. There not a mark on anyof the fish I caught, although I would have like to have seen a bite mark on the 10lber :)
