Fly fishing for walleye

Post by beeman »

Well I finally got out for a real fishing trip here in SK. We went up to the Churchill River, for some canoeing and fishing. Before leaving I told my brother that I would be using my fly rod for walleye. "You'll never catch anything up there with a fly rod". The fishing was good for both of us, and fortunately for me, I kept up with my brother who was using worms and tackle, even though I have never really fished for walleye before.

The walleye were hot on medium to large sized olive wooly buggers fished with a sinking tip line. The 6 wt rod was sufficient for the 15 to 24" walleye, however, a 38" pike took the woolly bugger at one point and I had a 30 minute fight to land it. An 8 wt may have been better for that.

If you get a chance to fish in this province, I highly reccomend it.

Sorry no pics. I'll get some next time.

Great report. I remember canoe trips up on the Churchill River system back when I still lived in Saskatchewan. The fishing was great although I didn't fly fish at the time. I'd love to get back some time.

Ah....Beeman has completely switched to the darkside!

Glad to hear that you're having fun with your fly rods.

Welcome to the elite walleye-on-the-fly fraternity.

How seasonal do you suppose that Churchill fishery is?

Not sure, I just got here. I will be able to tell you after a summer camping trip up there.
