Mc Greggor Lake yesterday trout outing pic!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Glad you had fun.

Do lakers come in that shallow usually? Or was that just a fluke? I'm interested to know, as I know they are often very deep. Also, what do you fish for lakers with in the spring or very early summer if you don't troll... Thanks.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

yes - when the water is cold, the lakers can be very shallow. Typically right after ice out, the water is cold enough and you can catch them casting to shore or from shore. You can find them in Algonquin in 2ft of water tight to shore right after ice out. Thats also true for lakes like big rideau however the season is closed until June for lakers and you have to go deeper.

For lures, casting (and trolling) spoons like william wablers and little cleos work. I find that small rapala minnow baits work well too. The trout you catch in shallow water are usually very agressive because they're feeding. Of course they spook in shallow water so try not to drive over them in your boat.

When the top layers of the water column warm too much for lakers, they have to go deep to get the cool water with enough oxygen. At that point a downrigger is your best bet.

well....I see too many people with summer tactics when it comes to spring laker fishing.....the most important thing: find creeks (feeders) that are on the lake....they have to have a flat with near deep waters...lakers will be feeding at those key spot...if the winds is 10-15km and the wave are there you have better chances. use a small spinner.

I am glad I didn't cut your head on that pic!

It was a beautiful summer-like evennig spent on the water. We could catch and see a few really nice fish. What a perfect way to end a week day.

It was aslo great to fish with someone who knows what he is doing, and who is able to tell the difference between a laker and a bass bite, before seeing the actual fish.

I can't wait for our next outing!
