Bullfrog fishin'

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bullfrog fishin'

Post by something_fishy »

Well, I finally broke my no fish streak, well, sort of. I was at Petrie Island, shore fishing down by the new marnina they are building. The gentleman that was fishing from the dock caught 8 eyes the night before from that same spot. I was on the rocks because I was too worried about getting busted for being on the new marina with the sign that said private property and a big chain running across the gangway. :?

Anyway, I caught nothing, I was using soft shad rap, spinner(3 different colours) spinners with worm trailers, top water props, then on my last attempt I was just about to cast, I had the lure dangling about 1 1/2 feet off the water surface when....BANG, this huge, and I mean huge bullfrog jumps out of the water and grabs by chartreuse spinner and trailer :o . Not only did it go for it, it actually bit the hook and hooked itself. Well, I was shocked, this thing bent the rod over, it was about 8 inches in length, and thats not including the legs. I took it off the hook and set it free back in the water, boy it was glad to get out of there.

Pretty amazing thing though, at least I caught something, I think I might just give up on Petrie Island, I have seen a lot of people sitting there with the jig and worm setup, sitting on lawnchairs, but I just don't see the fun in that. I guess I'm just having bad luck here. :?

Chris

Heading out Thursday morning to Mississippi lake for panfish, 1 seat on the boat for anyone interested in joining me. I'll be heading out around 8:30ish and staying out until around 14:00ish or less depending on how fast I fill my bucket!! :D

Getting frogged beats getting skunked, I guess!

fighting frog

Post by something_fishy »

Not much of a fight, but lots of noise. I felt terrible for the poor thing, it was croaking and making this high pitched scream like sound, all the while it was using its little froggy hands to try to pry out the big hook through its snout. I really felt terrible, but I didn't see this coming at all. I freed it and it hopped back into the water. I felt better, but I'm sure its scarred for life, physically and mentally!!!!

I'm sure glad there was noone watching this, I probably looked like an idiot!! I was panick stricken with the "Oh my god, what do I do" look all over my face.

It definetely weighed more than 1 pound though.

Maybe I should change my name to something_froggy!!!!

That was one ambitious frog!!!

Reminds me last year fishing the Rideau with JimW in a tourney. He throws out a scum frog towards a really thick scummy mat. He says "hey MT, check this out".
He twitches his scum frog about a foot towards the boat, while a bull frog about 3' away advanced on his scum from a foot as well.
Twitch again, the bull frog advances again.
Next twitch as Jim's frog is about to fall off the scummy mat, this bull frog pounces on his scum frog.
I couldn't believe it.

Craziest frog I have ever seen. Especially considering he was in the heart of large mouth territory.

What...Give up on Petrie

There are about 20 or so spots that you can fish from at Petrie.Personaly I never fish the culverts because of the fact I have never caught a fish there, and there is sooo many people there too.Im not saying that you cant catch fish there, but move around a bit, go down Basswood Trail and fish the 10 or so spots along there. In 23 days it will be a bass fishermans paradise.

Next time you head out to the Islands shoot me a pm Il hook you onto some fish or at least try too.I have Never been skunked at Petrie and will be fishing there until.......Welll u get the point.

Good luck for pannies on Mississippi

MT, the bullfrogs on the Rideau River always chase the scum frogs. I am waiting for the day a huge bass, pike or musky takes the bullfrog chasing my scum frog.

That is the funniest post I have read in ages. If fish had arms I don't think a lot of people would be fishing!

and might I add to remember that you may only fish with one bullfrog a day. THE REGS SAY SO. That frog of S_F's might have had several in it's belly making it sooooo wrong buddy.

I'm still chuckling thinking about this.

The frog with it's little webby hands all over the line, trying to desperately pull the hook out but actually embedding it further in with all the muster it can put into each little desperate yank. The croaks of despair that meld into probably some of the most disturbing sounds ever heard by man that didn't involve murder.

and you...with each turn of the crank, causing more pain for the frog and bringing him to what he must certainly imagine to be a horrible end.

Tell me now, did you reel him in fast or slow?

LOL.. that is indeed a funny story but can you imagine the frog relaying this story to his other frog buds..

voice of frog -- "then just as i bit into my sandwich a horrible spike came through my lip, I was being dragged to some terrible end, I begged for mercy and the horrible monster set me free"

at which point the frog eats his other buds as they stare slackjawed with awe at him..
