A Story About A Gar...

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

A Story About A Gar...

Post by Muskiemagnet »

Well it all started last year with RJ. You remember the Gar, quite a fish. This 54" beast just got us started.

Image

Gar fishing is a small window of oppertunity, and a few conditions have to be met in order for success. Hot, calm, sunny days are needed and weed growth has to be present but not thick due to fishing in 2ft of water.

Last week every thing came togeather. RJ and I headed out to last years honey hole. This was the result... 49"er, 15lbs. NICE...!!!

So I return home and I have a message from another fishing buddy and fellow Hawk-talker (HOF) another Rob. Turns out he's got the next day off work. So fishing we go. After seeing RJ's post that evening, (HOF) was ready for some Gar. I thought I could hook him up somewhere close to my house, so we start the hunt. It was'nt looking too good at first, all the Gar I sighted the past week had moved out of the area. The pike were hitting good though...

One more spot to try...... Soon it was like " Holy s*%# look at that"..." Oh my God, there's a Giant".... " Sweet Jesus....!!!" and so on and so on... Here was the result for about two hours fishing.

The first fish......

These are just a few of the Gar landed, and we had many on. Two other fish we had on were about the same size as the big one, which came in at just under 20lbs. For anyone who has not met me and want to relate my size to the size of the fish, I'm 6'2" 215lbs...... I tried to keep the fish tight to my belly for the photos cause she was really fat for a gar. For some reason though she didn't like being up close and personal.

She was just under 20lbs. Hard to believe a fish that long can weigh so little. But I guess 12" of teeth don't weigh too much.

Pat that is AWESOME!!!! Amazing! If you keep pulling in fish like the ones you've shown us you'll be switching the muskie lads over to Gar lads! It's great to know though that there are some neat and unique fish that can be caught right here in our own backyards! Up until last year I always figured that to really have a great fishing experience and catch something awesome you would need to travel some place exotic....definitely not the case at all! Not only should we all be proud of MM for accomplishing such a feat but we should also take some pride in knowing that the Ottawa area truly is a marvel in itself. Makes me want to try even harder to keep it that way!!!

Congrats again Pat!!!

Awesome fish boys! I keep saying I am going to go out after them but I just don't seem to have the time!!! I might have to trade a Musky or a Lake Trout day for a day of Gar fishing!

Awesome Pat! Great night for you and HOF.

Sure would be nice for to see your names in the record books. I hope you'll consider registering the next one....I know when my buddy registered his big bluegill, they gave him a free mount of it.

Nice work on the water. :P
