A few guys have pm'd me about what we were catching the big Gar on. Sorry lads, forgot to mention that.
I was using a #4 Mepps spinner with a 6" steel trailer with a small treble. (HOF) was using a Vibrex Muskie bucktail in yellow, this lure has two big trebles.
The bucktail was by far the better lure for getting the Gar to attack, but I like the smaller wire hooks for deeper sets. Landing one of the fish is quite the challenge, getting a hook into that jaw is no easy feat. Once a fish is hooked we would loosen off the drag and hope for the best. Most fish get off when the fish jumps, which is lots. I guess when your in only 2ft of water a fish that size has no where to go but up.

1st off, CONGRAT'S on a truly incredible fish! You disagreed, but for someone like me, that woudl definitely be a "fish of a lifetime"!!
Loved the pics; apparently you got yourself a warm, sunny day after all.
2nd, MM, thx for the bit of education (above). I had no idea that these lure types would attract gar. Didn't know they jumped either! It must be a kick to catch something so outlandish looking, and BIG!

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
What a day
, I had never fished for gar before going out with pat, and after seeing RJ's monster, I had to try it
... The morning started off slow for the pike action, a few hammer handles spotted a couple of small gar and just before changing spot's we landed a half decent pike
So off to try to find some GAAAARRRRR. It was not long before we saw them everywhere, and as Pat stated there was a little bit of cursing going on
... It was not long befoe Pat was into the BIG ONE, I was a little worried about landing the beauty for him, especially since we did not bring the cradle or net
. Pat say's "Tail it" .
I could not even get my hand 1/2 way around it, needless to say he did not like being grabbed by the tail
, so on goes the smelly rubber glove
. After gettin airborne a few times, I had another shot at it. I gabbed the beak and with one head shake, I thought it broke my wrist, as it went nut's again
. Third time's a charm, I grabbed it again, it shook me like a leaf. There was no way I was going to let go of it this time, it would have had to take my arm off... So with one hand around the beak and the other under the belly, she made it into the boat
... A couple of quick pic's, and off she went
...
This truly had to be one of the best fishing experience's I have ever had, and catching 3 my first time, was absolutely amazing
... Thank's again Pat and congrat's on the record...
