normware.....congrats on the new boat purchase....
but you should look at selling privately....
the marina just made a crap load of money off ya, as often 'walk in' customers get taken to the cleaners....dont let them make MORE money off ya buy taking your used boat...
sell it yourself. make the money.
put it towards the purchase you just made...

I agree that I could have made more money by selling privately. But I would have needed to sell it first, to be able to apply it to the new boat.
If I did not then I would have been stuck with maintaining two boats. Some costs would be : insurance storage (no place for two boats) licensing etc) reducing the benefit of a private sale. I would also pay more in taxes again somewhat reducing the gains.
Right now Princecraft and Mercury have some signifigant rebates on (1670$). If I had waited I might would have missed them. Seriuosly reducing any benefit.
The boat I traded in was a 14 foot lowe with a 30hp 4 stroke. I checked Auto traders boat section for similar and the same model boat for several weeks. I came away with an idea of what the market would bear for my current 14 footer. I could have sold it for about 1000 to 1500 more than what I got in trade. The question wouoold be how much risk am I prepared to handle?
If I calculate the loss of reducing the new boat taxable amount I would be about 250.00 to 750.00 ahead by selling privately.
If I could not sell it before the rebate period and apply the sale to the new boat, I would then pay about 900.00 to 1200 more for the new one.
Steve-H I appreciate what you are saying. More than likely they will sell my trade in and make some money on it. Precisely why they are in business.
Other things I had to consider is that if Iwanted a boat in a reasonable amount of time most dealers had little stock and were waiting for delivery.
I also believe that Laurentian Marine (a board sponsor) had dealt with me openly and did not try to nickel and dime me with spurious charges -
documentation fees ( 200 - 300 $ at some dealers), I absolutely hate this cash grab and have walked out on one dealer the second after he wrote it down even though I would have paid less for a similar boat with this charge.
charging me 40$ for the transfering the trailer ownership other than what the ministry charges (Laurentian - 10$)
charging me 60 to 100$ for the registration numbers ( laurentian - $35) everywhere else)
reasonable dealer prep and delivery - laurentian 300$ - Others 500 - 800
Trade in value may be important but you really have to look at all the details of the deal not just upfront cash.

sounds like you put some serious thought into it.
GOOD.
you see, i have had some close friends get taken to the cleaners doing exactly what you were doing...
one went in to 'look' for a boat, and came out with a 11000 dollar 14 lowe with a 25 hp four stroke honda...
11000!!!!!!
he could have gotten SO MUCH MORE for that money....many times marina's will taken 'walk in's' to the cleaners....
I"M Glad you weren't one of them...
ENJOY your new boat....as i'm sure you will....careful with the increase in HP the first few times....
i went from a 2 hp on a 14' canoe to a 50hp on a 17' lund....the first few times i almost threw myself out of the boat....
(did i mention ENJOY your boat
)

Thanks steve.
I did not pay 11000 for my 14 foot lowe (bought new). It was much less but I still paid for a few thngs that I probably should have negotiated better ( pdi/shipping etc).
I have driven a faster boat ( 700lx nitro with a 115 - 55mph top speed) so I know what you mean about the extra horses.
I will enjoy the new ride. It just that I only get it in a week

Congrats on your purchase AWESOME looking machine.....goosd luck with it.
First off great looking outfit Norm. I'm sure you made a wise buy despite what Steve-Hamilton thinks.
Steve-Hamilton you should check some facts about the reality of the marine business. I don't think too many people get taken buying tin fishing boats. You can't. The margins are that skinny. In fact I know both the provincial and federal gov'ts each usually make as much more than the dealer and they did nothing for it.
When a dealer takes a boat in on trade for 10G and turns around and asks 12G for it is he being taken? Don't forget the second buyer will want to buy it for 11G and don't forget the dealer has to carry that boat in inventory. If he dosen't sell it within the next few weeks he'll likely be stuck with it until next year. Would you want to carry that boat for another year?
I think most people who are unhappy and feel taken by marine dealers is not because of price but of service. The reality is profits are so low that something has to suffer and that unfortuneatly often it is service.
As far as friends paying 11G for a quality 14"er with a 25 4s well if it has a floor, nice seats, livewell, trailer and accessories that is what that outfit is worth.
Do a bit of shopping. With our very short selling season any dealer who turns down a grill cheese waiting for a t bone is going to go hungry. The consumer holds the cards. Leave something on the table. Grind too much and you'll end at a cut rate dealer who makes money by skimping on the important stuff like service.
