I firmly believe most of the smallies will be near their spawning sites and somewhat easy to catch. The buckets should now be into their summer pattern.
They are long past the spawn as Timbanger said. I've been catching some pesky ones that force me out of my best spots, because they're not in season. It's frustrating because this is evidence that they no longer need protection, and that the season should open earlier.
I agree with CB, the bass seem to be heading to the summer haunts real quick. Although some water bodies are a bit later, I don't think there will be any huge problem with bass being pulled of the nest.
And the season opener is fine by me, it helps protect the fish from being slaughtered on the nest.
They are out of spawning beds. Its open game for your knowledge. They won't be hoovering in one specific area but they will be in normal bass spots eg. docks, shallows, deep water humps.

What would we talk/argue about for the entire month of May and June if the season opened earlier
Seriousily, I believe they are trying an earlier season for bass in NY with just a 2 bass limit or was it 100 % C&R but you could legal fish for them. Will have to check. Assuming this goes well than Ontario may follow...in 20 years
