No musky, lots of carps

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

No musky, lots of carps

Post by Lucky4 »

Had no luck targeting muskies on the Ottawa Friday and Saturday.

Went on the Rideau Sunday with MuskyWannabe. We exchanged a few words with Nighttroller at the ramp. MW caught the only fish of the day, a 30" pike. No fish caught but a good day spent on the water with a musky enthusiast.

I had to change of target species to finally be able to land a few fish. In about three hours, 9 carps between 14 and 22 lbs were landed.

Here are a few pics.

Lucky

Any advice on fishing carp on the Rideau? My buddy and I watched them splashing the surface all day once and we both agreed we would like to go back and catch us a few.

We saw them mostly in the shallower water and of course hitting the surface, so do we go with surface bait and in shallow water or do you have another tidbit to share.

Thanks

If you want to catch them off the top you can use those dog buscuits that float.. the small round ones about 1/4" diam. Just make sure the fish aren't spawning as you'll struggle to get them interested. Don't forget to throw out some loose feed to attract them/make them interested in feeding.

Nice catch Lucky4 and thanks for the report... what did you use to catch them?

Yeah, Rideau was a tough day with only 1 pike to show for it. We did though get to see 2 huge muskies put on an arial act as they jumped not more than 20 feet in front of us!!!! We were sitting there casting and out of nowhere a huge muskie leaps straight out of the water, unfortunately it wouldn't grab what we were throwing!

A great day though out on the water! I think I may have to hit the carp fishing a time or two to see what it's all about!!!

Thanks for the fishing day!!!

Mr J., John,

These carps were caught on the Ottawa river.

I was using corn, directly on the hook, without hair. I used a 3 onces weight, attached directly to a three way swivel, and only about 4 inches of line to the hook (for the carp to set the hook itself).

The carps were very active and jumping all over the place. I was just casting were they were jumping.

Of course, in the Rideau, with all the weeds, you might have to experiment with a floating rig.

Good luck and let me know how you did,
Lucky4

PS: MW, we will definitely have to organize a musky/carp trip.
