Windy Opener

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Windy Opener

Post by Cancatchbass »

Got out on the St. Lawrence at the break of noon today.

The bass were quite co-operative, but the wind caused me some problems.

Filled my smallmouth quota for the derby first, then went after largemouth. Found a bunch in a spot that didn't hold any fish at all last year, but couldn't fish them as I was being watched by some other boats. Can't give away this spot, since I may need these fish in July for the Renegade tournament.

This bass was the first largemouth to make it to the boat:

Not huge, but in great shape and comes with a story. When I felt the pick-up I reared back hard and set the hook like my life depended on it. A little too hard, it seems, as I broke the line just past the rod tip. "Dang" said I, or something to that effect, as I stared down at where the fish had been sitting.

Make that- was STILL sitting. I could see 20 feet of my line, too...

So, I dipped the tip of my rod under the lost line, and gently lifted it up until I could grab the line. I then proceeded to hand-line the fish to the boat. Hopefully, this kind of luck will continue all season!

For the nature lovers, here's a shot (from an unusual angle) of the heron that witnessed my hand-line caught bass:

I hope to get out this evening after all my chores are done and do some culling...

Nice largemouth there CCB. Oh how I wish that I could get out of the office and try for some of those greenbacks.
Do you have a tripos that allows you to take photos like that CCB, or do you have a silent partner who goes out on the hunt with you ?

Sorry, Bunk:

Someone has to play with the fishies!

Here's the best one I got tonight- from shore:

Not sure- but I think I had a 1000 point day...

PS-FireFox- when in the boat alone, I set the timer and put the camera on the bow pedestal seat.

Great story on that hand-retrieved bass, CCB. You had some divine help or something there!

Nice looking pics........ Also love the unusual shot of that heron. Lookin' right at his Adam's apple!

W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
