Got out this morning on the Rideau River for a couple of hours. Left the bait caster at home and tried some muddlers, bass streamers, poppers, and a deer hair mouse.
First thing, a pike decided he liked my mouse and its gone. Likewise a muddler.
Changed location and put on a large black and white streamer on one rod and a popper on the other.
Caught bass for the next 2 hours. Four (would be) keepers, some tiddlers, plus some rockies and panners.
Nice change from the plastic. Great feeling when they inhale that popper.
No doubt this type of fly fishing is unchallenging and crude compared to "dry fly" dabbling. Don't know. Never did it. Not going to. Guess I'm just a plebian at heart. I put ashes in my hair and on my forehead, and donned the hair shirt before posting here. Hope that suffices.
Regards: Jigs.
fly fishin this morning
Nothing wrong with pan fish and bass on the fly. A guilty pleasure for a lot of us for sure. Sometimes it can be more effective than the bait caster for sure.
And you can catch 'em on a dry fly - I have a hot pink wet fly (fished dry) that the bass (and pumpkinseeds) seem to love. Always lots of fun.

Yeah, I have a mess of pike fly's that frankly look a bit nasty to cast - especially if one hits the back of my head.
Something I will have to try someday though.
Where is a good place to access at the Champlain bridge. I have never fished it and since it is really close to work would like to give it a go.

Squib,
Park on the Island. You can access the water from the downstream end and you can wade back to the islands on the Ottawa side of the river. A staff is a good idea if the water levels are up as the current really rips through there. Easiest spot to wade across is just about the large submerged rock (you can't miss the wave) about a 1/4 the way back up towards the bridge. Pretty much waist deep and flat.
Cheers,
Todd

this is where i go:
k you cross the champlain bridge to the quebec side turn right and then park along the road. There is a path along the river and the best place for bass and little pike is under the actual bridge. A good spot for trout and bass is to the left where there is a small iron bridge fish it where the current meets the stillwater. Tell me how u make out
