Mosquito madness

Looking for a little guidance concerning mosquitos at dusk and while doing some night fishing. A few of us are coming up to Charleston Lake in two weeks and wanted to get some opinions on mosquito repellant. I have some 100% deet and some other stuff you can buy at the store but was wondering if anyone has used a ThermaCell or other device.

Any suggestions will help.

Don't breath, they can't find you then.

we use skintastic by off. seems to work good enough.
the 100% deet stuff is probably top grade but you're not supposed to put it on your skin.

Get the 100%deet. It is the only stuff that truly works. From what I have seen in the past week you don't want to be caught without the best. They were even covering my motor on Wed night - thousands of them Just read the label and buy the highest concentration of DEET you can get.

Deep Woods Off and Muskol are roughly the same and may help you survive the 9:00 PM attack. I find Dkintastic works well enough if you are downtown. But if you're at the lake don't be caught short.

Remember to keep the spray away from anything plastic like fishfinder screens!!!
The weekend of the 23rd is when the f-h Charleston adventure weekend is. Sounds like you may be there at that time or possibly one of those going.

You folks shouldn't be telling those fella's from PA to bring any bug juice up in two weeks from now! Heck, there'll be snow on the ground, and the lake will be almost frozen over Canada yah know, eh!?

Kidding aside, all are correct. Don't breath, use the best juice you can find, and keep it away from plastic. Last suggestion to add is: stay out of the booze too, as it makes you sweat more than if you were just drinking water or pop. The litte biters just love Molson and Labatts!

I don't know if you're planning on having children along, but don't use DEET products on little ones. Especially not the 100% DEET.

Too weird the way the skeeters hone in on you from your exhalation. Bizarre little beasties, they be.

Aahhhh.......remember the good ole days when we had the real good stuff thats outlawed now. Carcegenon laden, cancer causing, tumour growing stuff.

Yea i'm talking about 4-12 or was it 6-12....don't remember, probably used it too much.... maybe thats why. Had a black flag on the bottle.......real greasy. Didn't just keep skeeters away IT KILLED 'EM STONE DEAD. Made your lips go numb too if you happened to get some on them. Came in an aerasol spray can too with the stuff that eats the ozone......Must have been the impetus for Agent Orange and DDT. Get some in your eyes and it blinded ya.

Muskol and Deep Woods are just kids stuff.

Just like the old label, that was "Black Flag". 4-12 mixture. Dangerous as ol'hell, but worked like a charm!

Good point by the chap before. Don't use the good stuff on the kids, its just not worth the risks. Buy them a bug shirt with faced hood, and leave it there. I try -even though mine are now teenagers - to not put anything on them, and they use the bug shirt, and are happier to do so since they "don't stink" of bug juice.

Good point,, Bass Assassin!! But the reason it's particularly dangerous for kids, especially little ones, is that their young systems are not able to handle the chemical(s). I hate the stuff, and try to spray my clothing when possible, rather than myself. But there are times when you've just got to get it on you to get them off you!

How about one of those butane powered repellents. I hear they work fairly well and no chemicals or deet.

Wear light clothing, dont breathe and bring yoour body core temp down (lay in a tub of ice).

A buddy of mine lives out in the sticks and I am forever getting eaten alive when I do go out there, so he got a brilliant idea... citronella. They hate lemon of any kind. So he made a solution of 50% water/50% pure lemon juice and sprayed it on his lawn... it worked.

Could always spray your clothing with it too I guess you'll end up smelling like a J Wax employee instead of 1 week old dead minnows on a hot day...
