fall pike and bass

Post by Mike Lennox »

Hello gang,
I always seem to catch alot of fish from june until early september. Then I seem to catch almost nothing until next spring. I always stop catching fish around thanksgiving, the fish seem to disapear :x I have heard that the best time for big pike and bass is fall, but how should I fish for them? . I use all of my regular flies and spots and nothing is there?
what do i need for fall fishing
thanks,yff

yff,

As the weather gets colder you'll find that the SM will switch from insects and crayfish to baitfish as they start to gorge themselves in preparation for winter. Switching to clousers, micky fins, etc when they turn to baitfish should keep you into fish.

You will also find that the SM will move to deeper water as the water temperatures drop. The only advantage here is that walleye and pike move back into shallower water. Once the SM bite dies off I switch over to eyes and pike till the weather is too nasty to fish comfortably. Once again I like to use baitfish imitations.

Cheers,

Thanks for the help todd!
I Have a few "few as in alot" more questions"I have alot to learn:
1. What kind of structure should I look seek for the late season pike/smallies?How deep approximately"
2.How long will the pike bite and smallie bite last for?
3. Will they still hit poppers in the evenings?
And 4:will the largemouthes still be biting
thanks alot man, and sorry for all the annoying questions,

yff,

For SM I look for rocky bottoms with good sized rocks that offer cover, etc. If it's part of or very close to a drop off all the better as they tend to move deep (15'+)when the water gets cold. I was catching SM last season probably till the middle of September then nothing. You will probably find that your catch numbers will drop overall but the number of big fish that you catch will increase.

Pike will be moving into shallower, weedy water as the temperatures drop. They are typically feeding on shiners and perch, so find them and you'll be in the ballpark. The eyes will also be feeding on shiners and perch, though (on the Rideau) they tend to prefer rocky shallows close to deep water (drop offs, holes, etc).

As for poppers, if they're still shallow it's still possible to catch them on poppers. I prefer to use the small panfish poppers.

With respect to LM, I don't fish typical LM waters and have only caught 1 LM in the last two years.

yff,

Also, if you don't already have some you might consider tying up some leaders with biteguards if you're going to target pike. They're easy to make, cost less (per unit) than the wire biteguards, and turn over like any other leader/tippet.

hey todd b:
I have considered making bite guards, but so far my 20 lb test berkley vanish flourocarbon has kept the pike on the line. I will still make some because they are very expensive to buy from green drake. I also dont think that the vanish will keep any pike over 3lbs on the line.
thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it,

yff,

I've ben using 12" of 30# PowerPro as biteguard. I might consider switching to Tyger leader or Seagar Floro leader material next season for my bitegaurds.

I've actually never been bitten off by any toothy fish yet, wether I've been using biteguards or accidentally catching eyes on 3x tippet material. My only losses this season have been due to a couple of rub offs against rocks and one (1) knot failure.
