First of season
Landed two chinnies at the mouth of a lake Ontario Trib Saturday "drift fishing" the still waters of the harbour area. Checked upstream in the fast water and there was a small run happening, and a few guys were trying for them. Water was dirty from the Friday night rain. The liners were getting plenty in the harbour.
Checked another trib nearby that gets a big run and there was no sign of anything yet.
By Sunday it was over, the fish had moved offshore, but there may be some left in the tributary itself.

YFF, the winter IMHO is the porbably best time to target Steel!
Some tribs at the mouths do freeze, but most of the time you can find open water to fish them in the winter months.
Drop me a line, and we can set up tryin to get you out with Roxy and I.
This offer also stands for anyone who wishes to join, from pretty much every weekend from now till Opener in the spring(Except for my 9 days with Moosebunk

8wt is perfect, though I have heard of some using a 6wt bro, I am no fly guy by far, but a 8 to 12 lber on a 6 wowzers
Anytime Todd, drop me a line and the salmon are in 1st, so atleast an 8wt for them, but almost every weekend from here to Xmas, a few ice trips but open water chrome has the bass gear put away!

FF,
I can imagine, given what a 4lb SM can do to a 6wt. LOL While they say an 8wt is fine for salmon, it doesn't have enough backbone to quickly land a 25+lber. To avoid stressing out salmon I've been told a 10wt is more appropriate.
Cheers,

FF,
Definitely...I'll have to pop into the store and see Michel about an 8wt. There probably isn't too much of a difference between salmon/steelhead fishing (in the tribs) whether you're floating or flying. Fly fishing in this case is typically just swinging various wet flies, etc through the feeding lanes. Now catching fish on dry flies...that's a thrill, though the majority of big fish are caught using wet flies.
Now what would be nice is to hook into some migratory browns. If you haven't read it yet the Canadian Fly Fisher has a good article on techniques for migratory browns. While it's on fly fishing technigues, it also goes into detail on the locations/behavior during pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn periods. It was a very informative read and I know how you like to catch those golden beauties!
