Kentucky Lake Crappie

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Kentucky Lake Crappie

Post by PikeSlayer. »

Not sure if anybody ever fishes in Kentucky, but we made the haul down this year the Kentucky Lake and boy, talk about Crappie.

The fishing was slow for us at first, so I decided to try some flatlining techniques we use for Bass in Lake Erie - whammm, it was just what the doctor ordered....all the big Crappie we caught trolling... Lots of Cats and Bass too!

Here was a few we picked up. I'm not sure how to embed pictures into a post so hopefully this link below works.

Big Crappie

Post by Jigs »

Pike Slayer:

Those are some huge crappie.

What did you use trolling for them?

I've caught them as incidental catch on rapalas, but never thought of trolling.
Works........must be a good idea

Did you stay at a lodge?

How's the cost of stuff.....food, beverages, etc?

Not nosey.........Want to go South fishing someday.............soon

Thanks, any info appreciated:

Awesome Slabs man!
There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.

Thanks for the feedback!

We were trolling some new Rapala Jointed Shad Raps in a Natural pattern – we had 2 sizes, and the small size seemed to work better, but we caught 'hubcaps' (that's whatthey call theem down there) on both. They were the magic lure – hands down.

I've went to the same place for the last 2 years and it is a great arrangement. The guys I went with have been going down there every spring, I think forever.

The place is:

Cypress Springs Resort and Marina
2740 Cypress Trail
New Concord, KY 42076
(270) 436-5496

They have full Marina, restaurant and an 8 Room Motel, which I think was about $40-$50 /night. Everything is relatively cheap. It’s all right there and the people are really nice. Lots of pros down there keep there boats at the marina and are good for tips (if you can get them to talk). They all tend to do this ‘spider-rigging’, but man o man – we saw so many Crappie and they were absolutely huge. We saw a bunch that were over 3 pounds. The biggest we caught was 2.5 pounds.

I'd be happy to supply any more details that would help a fellow angler bag some of these prizes.

I know I’ll be back there next spring for sure…

Nothing like deep fried crappie and a cold beer after a long day in the boat! lol
Good Fishing,

Lake in ol'Kaintuk

Post by Jigs »

Did some reading on Kentucky Lake

They have water issues down there.

If they don't lower the lake, it affects the fishing.(negatively....somehow)?

If they do the big boat people are up in arms.(cruiser folks)

Seems lots of fish to be caught though...............something like around here; we don't lack a whole lot.

Seriously, no way I'd run to Kentucky for big crappie, when we have a good bass/pickerel/pike/trout/ right in our own back yard.....And the crappie ain't too shabby here either.

Nice to have the info; I put mine in the "maybe" drawer   , right beside Ain't gonna happen

Also; not to be nasty, but I'd rather spend my money in Canada......Think I'll go out and get a steak for the BBQ, and some softwood lumber for the deck. :|
