Long Island Report

Post by Todd B. »

Well we got on the water around 6ish. The leveles at Long Island are extremely low as well, but it still offers a lot of holes and structure to hold fish. The smallies were following our wolly buggers, unfortunately they weren't taking them. With that we switched to small poppers...instant action! While we didn't manage anything over 9", the action was non-stop. In hindsight I should have used my 4wt to make the most of the small ones we were catching.

Hey guys, Any specific colours or patterns of poppers you were using? Todd, I might see you up at Blakeney on Saturday...have to work out a few details.

BA,

I like dark colours (Black, Purple, etc) on bright sunny days. I'll swicth to a teal/white/yellow (froggish) pattern in low light or overcast days. A chartreuse has worked occasionally as well.

Size can be a major factor as well. Yesterday there were only nipping at the tail of a #6 foam popper. Switching to a #10/12 made the difference. On other days switching to the #6 (which makes more noice) has induced better strikes. Trial and error till you find the right one.

With respect to panfish poppers, no one in Ottawa seems to be carrying any (or in the disired colours). I'll probably wind up ordering some from BassPro for next season.

hey bass assassin:
They arent really picky about the coulors. I like chartreuse/black,green with black spots "leopard frog",black for evening and then gold with black stripes and a red mouth for hot sunny days. For smaller bass try panfish poppers like sneaky petes. O yeah and for pike chartreuse/black or leopard frog seems to get the most strikes.
