lead core line?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

This knot is used to attach a mono leader to leadcore.

Make a loop in the leadcore, about 4 inches from the tag end.

Image

Next step is to slide back the outer coating on your leadcore, approx 3 inches.

Cut the lead off, then slide the outer sheath back out till it's snug.

Image

Insert your mono leader(I prefer 20 lb),so it butts up with the lead inside, then work the knot down towards the tag end(keep the mono butted up again the lead inside).

Image

Pull the knot tight, holding the dacron on each side of the knot(then snug it up tightly, holding the mono/leadcore to really cinch it down.

The knot looks like it will slip, but it doesn't.

The Willis Knot ;)

I use the Willis knot....but with two lock knots. When i got my lead core set up from King-me ...he had three knots, My leader is about 100 feet, (tends to get shorters as time goes on) plus I have about 200 yards of braid as backing , I only used my lead core three time this year, and i landed two fish with it.....but man I love it, as markus stated.....the leadcore is now one of my staples in my Port Hope set up, I picking up a second Penn 309 to have a back up to my main rod...the rod i use is about 10 feet long...it was King-me's off his charter boat...and i love it...I think you will see it a few times at Quinte :D

Lure depth with lead core line varies with amount of line out, speed & type of lure.
IE: a spinner at 6 mph with 100' of line out = shallow
: a deep diving large plug at 3 mph with 100' of line out = much deeper

Lead core line will generally run deeper than other lines but doesn't always mean deepest if variables are different.

Good Luck

I like to troll walleye with lead core when I want to move baits up and down in the water column with out reeling in line or changing snap weights. So if I am working an 18 foot flat with a small jointed shad rap and notice fish holding just off a break at 24 feet and on top of the 18ft flat...I will zigzag along the contour and increase boat speed in 18ft of water to raise the crank and then slow down in the 24ft of water so the bait drops in the strike zone. I find lead core is the only solution that works for this type of vertical control because it is very speed sensitive.

If I want to run at a set depth of say 35ft then I usually use crank bait dive curves, down riggers and or divers (Jet or Dipseys).

In most big water situations you are trying to build a productive spread of lines that cover most of the active fish zones. Lead core is just another way to get baits in front of fish.

good luck with the 'old school' leadcore :D

Planer Boards and segmented core work real well together. Its a good application for spooky walleyes and salmon. I would recommend 8ft medium action rods and mid-sized level-wind reels.

roughrider out
