Just a little aside here, ....DO NOT, .....AND I MEAN, ...DO NOT, ... "USE" STAINLESS STEEL BOLTS, SCREWS, ...HARDWARE OF "ANY" KIND, ...ON AN ALUMINUM BOAT.......PLEASE ....trust me on this one....
Hey Scooter,
Why do you not use Stainless Steel on Aluminum? All of my hardware on my boat has stainless screws...Floor Boards, dash, cleats and motor mounts. Should all of the manufacturer screws and bolts be removed?

They don't build them to last forever, or you'd never buy a new one.
Food for thought.

:D :D :D

Did a little more "work", ...after "work", ..cause it's still dark, ... before "work", .....got it?

Before I get to that, ....I'll try to answer "Eye Trackers" question, .....kind of, ....as simple as I can....

Hmmmmm, .....Let's think of "steel", .....as "supper", .....or a "casserole", (...even better,) :D
I won't ask if anyone has ever had a steel casserole, .....(just in case mama is peeking over your shoulder)

Anyways, .....there are umpteen different kinds of stainless steel, .....different "ingredients" are added, ....depending on what "properties" the steel needs, .... for whatever application it is intended for, ...

Basically, SS all looks the same, ...so, ....unless you actually made the steel, ....or know the "recipe" for what you have, ....you're in the dark, ....literally. :(

Assuming this hardware was installed when the boat was new, ...one would hope the manufacturer would use an "aluminum friendly" grade of SS. :)

The stuff you buy at HD or CTC may "look" the same, .....but so does a "turkey" or "ham" casserole on the surface...,
......so if you're allergic to pork, ...are you just going to just grab one, ....and dig in?

I hope I made my point here, .....or at least made everyone hungry

Roughrider refered to a "battery drain" causing a reaction, ...if I remember my high school chemistry correctly, .......the aluminum and the SS actually create a "battery".

Just wonder if this has a bearing on this "positive", "negative" current thing, ... when rigging? :?
Food for thought!!! (can't get away fom this "food" thing tonite)

Whew :!: :!: ,....now back to my update.... 8)

This is my "one of a kind", ....soon to patented, ....foam extractor...

Image

I'd tell you how much research went into it, ...but you wouldn't believe me, .....anyways... :P

Got everything straightened up and organized, .....she's as ready as she can be now....

gas tank.....

Image

battery....

Image

seat.......?

Image

definitely roomy now, ...but a little "sparse" (I'm reminded of how our ancestors used to fish)

Got some more stuff to show ya, ... but I've gone on long enough for one nite....
catch ya later.....

Hello Scooter,
Thanks for the reply...I thought it may have been some sort of chemical reaction thing I have not heard of, but it seems to be crevice corrosion. If I remember this correctly you need Water added to the Aluminum and Stainless to create a closed cell.

All of the stainless hardware added to my boat (where Marine Grade Aluminum and Stainless touch) are coated with 3M Marine Grade 5200 Sealent. Hopefully this will prevent or slow down any crevice corrosion. I check my through hull and below the waterline screws every spring for signs of corrosion.

Thanks Again....and good luck with the boat. Looks like you may find the leak now...

The chemical reaction thing with the stainless and aluminum reminded me of apparently the same type of thing if you use regular plywood on an aluminum boat. I can't remember exactly the reason (maybe cyanide in the pressure treating or something like that) but I was told to NEVER use regular plywood on an aluminum boat....especially on the transom. Just food for thought.

Yeah folks, .....so remember, ....if ya buy a boat, ......keep it away from the water... :!: :!:

See ya at Quinte......

Hi Ken, .....

I remembered reading something like that too..... :?

So I did a search.....

http://www.fish-hawk.net/hawktalk/viewt ... re+treated

Regular ply is good, ....."pressure Treated" ply, ....is not so good, ...

It was the mention of "cyanide" that got me thinkin' something wasn't right.

There was a big flap about the "cyanide" in PT lumber a while ago, .....I believe the newer stuff doesn't contain any now, ......as to whether it will still eat your boat away, ......I'll let somebody else find out, ....

Thanks for your help, ......

And ya made me hungry...:!:

Keep on keeping on with that casserole, er project, of yours. Good luck.

W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

:D :D :D

Not really any update tonight, .....had to go out for awhile, ..... :(

Did want to show you this one picture though.....

This is what's up front, ...under the bow, (brought to you by the wonders of modern technology, "plus",.....a flash, .....and a good guess at aiming the camera)

Image

......what a dogs breakfast, ...eh?

The guy I bought it from, said he had redone the floor,

But, ....it kinda looks like he was tryin' to build a rec room in there, ......and ran out of money, ...or space, .....or both....

If I don't have to touch it, ....I ain't gonna, .....

In fact, .....I probably shouldn't even have shown ya that photo, .....

All I'll hear now is, ....."you can't leave it like that"....

And all I'm gonna answer is, ...."just watch me"....

Gettin excited now, .....I think, .....kinda, ....not really, ...yeah, ...sort of, ...maybe more scared than excited, ....actually, ...not scared, .....apprehensive, .....damn, .....I don't know, .....tomorrows it though, ...one way or another..... :D  :D  :D

You'll know .. once you put her in the water ... if you will have to do the front.
Did you find info on tightening rivets? I believe ( after some limited machine and boiler repair training) it takes two people.. one on the outside... with a steel block, and one on the inside with a hammer. A couple of whacks and that should reset them. To mark the rivets... get a indelible permanent marker.

Hope this helps

Cut that one pretty close, ....

What a great day to be out on the water, ....key word here, "on" ...not in....

Ready to "Rock & Roll"

Image

"Crash" joined me on my expedition today, ...I picked him up at a Timmy's just off the highway and, ....."it's showtime"

Launched at Chiefswood, ...and checked the boat over as soon as it was in the water....

Success, .....(if you can call finding a leak in your boat success) ...couple of 'em, .....spurting pretty good too

Image

Image

Image

Definitely not the worst case scenario....,
They're where I can see 'em, ....so I can fix 'em.....hopefully.....

Now it's time to go for a run....., ..if nothing else, ....the baby sits a good two inches higher in the butt.... 8)

I need a tape of "screamming rubber", ....no "bow" in the air take off now, ....just raises her skirt and says, "I'm outa here"........"BEAUTY"

We head up river to see what other suprises might be in store, ....nothing, ...except she stopped leaking while we were "boogieing", ...guess that part was out of the water......

Stopped and decided to drown some minnows, ....

Being the nice guy that I am, ...and after "reading" about how the front of the boat, ...was the prime fishing position, ....I let Crash have it...., :P

I gave him "control" of the boat, ... and asked him if he knew how the motor worked....?

"I'll figure it out"

He did......

Image

I decided to just cast off the back, .....heck I was happy to just find the leak....

Well, ....I managed to somehow hook into a rather nice "cat", ....after a nice fight, .... I got it into the boat, .....it decided it wanted to go in my "live well"

Here I'm tellin it, ....that I really don't want to keep you, ....."get the hell out of my boat......" :!: :!: :!:

Image

Just a quick pic before I tossed it, .....(a little pee pee off at it, at this point) :x

Image

 Last second, ....decided to measure it for the derby, ....24"...

Image

Next I got a smallie, ....

Image

This is where the fun starts....

I was putting the next minnow on the hook, ........he jigged, ....I jagged, ....
the minnow is in the "live well", ......which stretches from the front of the boat to the back....

Grabbed another minnow and cast it out, ......

Things are cool, ... til' this minnow starts swimming up and down my boat, ....couldn't take it no more, .....

Image

Image

Image

Ever fished with a bailing bucket?, ........didn't think so, ...try it sometime, ...it works, ....especially in a "live well"

Image

Finished off the day with another albino "rockie"

Image

This is Crash after a productive day, .....at the front of the boat.....

Image

Well, ....finding the leak, ...made my day, ....everthing else was just a bonus...

There's never a dull, (or quiet) momment with Crash, .....thanks for the help Bud, .....and thanks for putting me on some fish, ..... :D

You can run the front of the boat anytime.....

Update on the repairs comin' up....
