I am heading to Quinte in NOvember and need some advice on rod holders. I am looking for some rod holders to use with my homemade planer boards and mast that I am building.
The problem is I dont want to screw anything in to the boat and I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for it either. I have a down-east that I use and it is great but once I try to put it a higher angle which I will need with the planer board I can't fit the rod in it. The butt of the rod is too long and it its the compartments on the side of the boat.
Anybody have any ideas of clamp on rod holders out there or how to build some that will work for the Quinte Eyes.
While we were there this past weekend I saw at least one individual with a 2 x 8 I think it was, 2 x 6 should be good enough. Anyway, he screwed his rod holders to it but then just used tie downs to connect the board to the boat.
Now you’ll need something anchored real well to connect to the boat. My Propacs are done this way to for now so I don’t put holes in the boat where I don’t want them.
I use down easters in my boat and they are great A couple of my trolling setups won't fit in the holder when clamped around the reel. I just slide the rod up so that just the handle is held in the holder. Works fine for me.
I love the one I have too. easy to use but when I try and angle the rod upwards, the handle cant fit in deep enough cause I have the compartments on the side of my boat that are about 4 inches below the gunwales.
This is what WIG is describing. Got the idea from Markus.
If you look closely at the rear of the boat, you see it is a 2x6 that runs across the back. Mine actually sits on the 2 rear cleats, so it never touches the paint. In your case, you could do the same, but you may wanna put a rag under the board.
I did screw 2 flush mount tie downs onto the floor. Then I use a ratchet strap on each side to tighten it down. You could ratch to the rear cleats I see in your picture.
Works great.
I used the plank idea that MT Livewell shows in my Princecraft and with some fiddling I had the single-clamp down easters holding rods almost at the vertical. It worked real well while trolling however I don't recommend bouncing through 3 foot swells with the rods in the down easters while positioned this way. Several times I nearly lost a rod.
First - I used 3/8 inch rope to attach plank to cleats. Then I ran tie-downs through the transom loops and back to the plank. THe tie-downs pulled against the 3/8 inch rope and the whole set-up was real snug - not going anywhere.
I ran four planer boards real easy until I lost one - and then three was real easy.
Fishhawk "gotta run like a madman bye thanks see ya good luck"
That boats looks like a Lund 1650 or very similar, I have one, I use the scotty bases I put five of the around various locations on the baot and then just shift the scotty holders as required. I bought one of the locking ring type and three regulars.Mount them infront of the rod locker, its aluminum under the carpet there and i put one right infront of the throttle contro, fits great there and no chance of loosing the rod. Works for me for three years now, plus they are cheap, about 8 bucks for the extra base and the holder was about 18 or 20.
They only thing is you cant burn them to keep warm like you can with Fishhawks design......
The Scotty or RAM mount rod holders are great for flexibility and moving around the boat. I drill and bolt mount all of my holders. Six in the back and two up on the front deck gunnels.
My inline planer board setup:
I have been in quite a few tournament boats and never heard of these down-east rod holders...are they some kind of local thing...or musky/big fish rod holder? Just wondering?
thanks...
