:D :D :D :D

I'm really hoping to get back to doing a bit more work on my puppy this weekend.... :D

I've got the new bilge pump to put in, ....the floor can always use another coat of varnish, ......and I've kind of been waiting for these, ..... 8)

They just came in the mail...... :D

Image

Allen C had mentioned that these rivets that can be installed from the outside, with no access to the inside necessary, ...and he'd send me some....

I admit that I couldn't figure how they would work, ....just from my past experience with pop rivets, ....there's always a hole in the middle...right? :?

So now I've got them, ....and I'm kind of excited.... :D

They're completely enclosed......

Image

This might show it better....

Image

I took a couple to work to try out, ....and see how they would seal....
I just grabbed a couple of pieces of scrap close to the hull thickness, ....I think

Anyways, ....here's the result, ......I think these will work just fine, ....I'll put some sealant in the hole before I "pop" them in, ..... :D

Image

Image

Hopefully I'll have another update at some point this weekend, .....I'll just have to play hide & seek for awhile.......

So is that big clump on the inside :?:

Can you make it smaller, by squeezing more or what :?:

They just seem big :!:

rivets

Post by allan.c »

hi everyone, the rivets to best explain them are aluminum, the head is made like a standard pop rivet but with a few modifications.the modifications being a cap that encloses the rivet and the rim of the cap is made slightly concave. when the rivet is compressed the rim and cap are pulled tightly against the metal resulting in a waterproof seal. I used them on a previous boat i had with eight of these rivets i installed below the waterline with no leakage problems SCOOTER :!: before i forget the maximun metal thickness for those rivets is 1/8".when i looked at your boat the holes i seen where along the centerline on the outside of the rib it looks like their is only one thickness of metal.I dout if it is any thicker than 90 thou, it should not be a problem.but if you need longer ones use those in the meantime and i will get some longer ones. allan.c

Hey Wig, .....

Yeah thats the inside, ....the outside is the usual cone shape of most rivets...

It's not that big of a mound, .....maybe 1/8 of an inch high, ....I might be a little concerned if they were "exposed", ....with the possibility of crushing it and breaking the seal, .....but where they are goin, ....it'll be fine.....

Allen, ....those rivets go through the outer hull, and then through the cross ribs inside, .....I know the cross ribs are pretty thick, ...I never took a vernier to 'em, ....so I'm not sure how thick, ....but I think it'll be alright...

If I put the new bilge in this weekend, ....I'll measure one of the back ones, just to see how thick they really are.... :?

If I think the rivets are too short, .....I'll let ya know..... :D

Thanks again, ...bud

Have to get this moved to the boat forum. Those rivets look like the ticket but how will you ever find the lost calipers if you dont pull up the floor.

:? :?

Hey Rideaufish.....

You've got me a little confused here, ....(i know it's not hard)

That long shaft, .....goes into the rivet gun, .....and the rivet goes into the hole till its flush with the head there, .....

Then you just pump the gun, ....it pulls that centre pin out, ...while collapsing the shaft on the other side of the hole, ......so there's nothing inside the boat, ...but the compressed rivet shaft, ..... 8)

Okay, ....so are we both confused now.....

I'll try and get some pics while I'm doin' it, .....hopefully that will clarify things....

....I wondered, .....but I didn't see no laughing smilies, .....

No problem, ....

 :D :D :D

Wasn't expecting to do an update this early,
......BUT, ......I just had to know whether those rivets would work or not, ...... :?

It is "THE DAY TO REMEMBER", ....so after stoppin' in to see "Dad" for a bit after work...,
( ....I just dread the day, ...when there's no "vet's" left, ... to remind everyone of the hell they went through for us...., )
"THANKS"!!!!, ... to all of Ya,......

....I was off to pick up some supplies, .....and a few extras, .....sort of

Finally got home around 3:00, ....got changed, .....and "pitter patter", ...let's get at 'er, ......

As I mentioned earlier, ....I only lost three of the original patches, ...
Job 1, .....sand the crap away from around the holes, ....
8)

Image

I also sanded the ones that hadn't broken off, ......they were hard as a rock...

Image

I'm a firm believer in, ..."if it ain't broke, ....Don't fix it", ....
So I left them alone, .....just rounded off the rough edges....

These are the tools of choice......

Image

See that tube, ....this stuff is awsome, .....used it before, ...on my transom, ....forget the 3m marine stuff, .....go with this, ......for aluminum anyways....

I'll just do a work in progress here....

sanded and ready to drill, ....that stuff I put in there, ....when it sticks, ...it's as strong as the base aluminum....

Image

holes drilled out now, ....rivets called for an # "11" drill,
Yeah, ....under perfect conditions, ...great,(ie. drill press), ....I used a #12, ....one smaller, ...with a hand drill , ....it was perfect....

Image

one done, ....and one ready to set....

Image

Without rippin' the floor up, .....I think they did the job...

All done, ....not like dinner though, ....dinner's not ready yet...

Image

Next job, ....get the old bilge out...

Image

Might just be plugged up with "poopie" like Mark's, ....will check that out later.....

Another job done, .....Nope, ......dinner's still not ready yet....

Image

Ya know, ....fishing is just like any other sport, .....you really need to keep your "balls" from rollin' around...
I decided to take care of that, ...even though my tummmy was startin' to rumble....., .....priorities, ...right?

Simple matter of drilling a couple of holes, ......

No. 1....

Image

No. 2

Image

Ah, ....."much better", ...the back storage compartment is now, ......."organized"...., :D

Image.

Unfortunately, .....with the hole size, .....it looks like the "balls", are the last thing "in", ......and the first thing "out",
.....oh well, ...that's "life"...
(gonna hafta watch that hook though, ... )

It's time to call it quits, .....outside anyways, .....

Brought my covers in, ....got some more work to do on them....

Last pic's tonite.....

Picked these puppy's up while I was doin' my rounds....

Much more "civilized" than just holes....

Image

And, ....this was the main reason for my "rounds" 8)

Image

Yeah, ....the box, .....it looks like the other one, .....but it "is" a lot "different", ....and better,
But I really won't know for sure, ....till I try it out...

Hopefully the new "finder", ...bilge pump, .....and maybe the handles will go on tomorrow....... :D

I'll let ya know, .....I think it's finally "dinner" time.... :D

Glad this made its way over to the boat forum.

And skooter, remember when you mount that transducer, if you're having a little touble with the bracket, please do NOT rip open your transom to see what's inside. :P

The boat has never been treated so well. I'm sure in kind it will give many many excellent fishing days.
Now, let's see that fishfinder!

:D :D :D :D

"Lost" weekend for sure, .....well not lost totally, ....almost totally,
....Actually, ...I never got "lost" at all, ......just wish I could have......

Remember the "hide & seek", ......well I got "seeked", ....before I had a chance to "hide".......,

I, ...ah, ....did manage to accomplish one important task though.....

Got my buddy over and we did the bottom end, .... :D

Draining the old stuff......

Image

Image

no water in there, ....so the seals are good..... :D :D :D

Starting to fill 'er up......

Image

This oil was recommended by my "marina" guru, .....the usual colour of the EP90 oil is a dark green,
.....this stuff is more like the Type "C" oil I had to use in my old electric shift 40 HP evinrude...., :? It's a lot lighter, ...in colour anyways....

We'll see how it holds up.....

Full now and ready to cap....., (you can see the new stuff dripping down the side)

Image

Put some gas line antifreeze in my tanks, So, .....She should be ready for the bar now, ..... :D

I've heard from a few people that it's best to leave the motor down in the winter, .....probably to be sure that "all" the water drains from the water pump, .....makes sense to me, .....just have to remember to tip it back up before I go anywhere.... (you can see how close to the ground she sits)

I may just wait till spring to put the fish finder in, ......I may not have a choice, (this one still works great anyways) :D

....The priorities now,

1).....get the bilge pump back in,
2)....get a roof over her, :D
3).....fulfill my other endless obligations, ...... :?

Oh, ....checked my rivets today, ....."lookin' good," :D
....guess we'll see after "Christmas", .....shortly after "Christmas" :D

If I make any headway this week, ....I'll let ya all know....
