I'm going to be the voice of reason here fellas.... :?

Are you seriously heading out on 2-3 inches of ice for panfish?.....I know we love to catch em but seriously....

A Survival suit doesn't guarantee you survive....

I can just see Crappie Bay this Saturday.....40-50 guys on it....who's gonna announce when it's too many?....when you are all swimming?

The water level on the Ottawa is going to fluctuate this week as they push water thru.....remember when the road was blown out at Petrie?...that could happen at any time again.....

Call me a wuss/worry wart.....I just don't want to hear of anyone getting hurt or worse trying to catch undersized crappies at Petrie...

Was out on white lake til 5 tonight, nothin to show, but if this cold keeps up everyone should be ice fishin by the weekend no prob! And RJ has an excellent point, while 2 to 4 inches will support yourself and maybe a handful of lads, a big pile of people can spell trouble. If you're gonna risk you're life... make sure you're goin after a TROPHY :!:  JK play safe.

Cheers,

bradford wrote:RJ I don't know who was walking on 2-3 inches of ice, it wasn't me. I had 3.5 in every whole I stuck the tape measure into. One thing I'm not is foolish. I beat the crap out of the shore line with a 5 foot log before stepping on.... And no you won't see me out there with a big group of people, however by the time Saturday rolls around there will be even more ice there.

All I can say is check the ice for yourself. Don't be stupid. And don't just assume others are stupid.

Brad
Where'd I say ya were stupid Brad?... :? though heading out icefishing on 3 inches of ice alone isn't going to get anyone a bravery or scholar award with me...

Bacon quoted...
The ice is about 2.5 inches (IN PLACES)...other places 3inches...other places LESS.
Anyways.....don't listen to me...what do I know?.... :)

I used to go on the ice when there was only 3" before. And the only reason I wait longer now is not because I'm older and wiser but probably because with every year that passes I put on about 15 lbs. And Bucket next time you go without me on first ice I'll be pee pee off.

It's nice to see fish being caught already.

Good work BM

I can just picture it now... Mind you, Iceman tried that with my TWO oars in the boat, and the 1 inch of ice got the better on my oars... Anyone have some good, cheap ores for sale? ... so I'm not convinced about this test...

Hey WIG,
Buckhams is all frozen over and has been for a couple of weeks. I don't know the thickness though.
The wind is breaking up the ice at my place this morning.

One anxious angler already had to be rescued on Cooks Bay ( south end of Simcoe ) and it wasn't even december yet
Local bait shop/hut operator thinks ice will be late this year on Simcoe as water temps are high .
Heard the same claim about Georgian bay , which means I may not be ice fishing but skiing should be good :D

Environment Canada calling for a colder than usual December so there still might be hope .

Remember, be aware of the wind and current. 3 inches on the back part of a bay may be 1 inch where there is a current (however slight) or wind and as Joco said, a light snow provides camoflage and insultation.
