Lower Unit Oil Change

Hey Guys,

I have a Mercury Model 110 9.8hp, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to change the lower unit oil.

There is only one visible drain plug, when seems to me there should be two. One in, one out...

Do I just take out the one screw and turn the motor upside down!? I've looked around online, and people mention they changed the oil, and proceed to ask another question... Not real usefull.

Any ideas?

There should be another one right at the bottom. you open the bottom one,then the top one and that will make the oil go out . Then to put oil back in you have to push it in from the bottom hole, I bought a special pump at CTC and that was the best purchase I've ever made especially if you're the type of guy that says colourful words when it's not going your way. You hook up the pump or the squeeze bottle to the bottom hole and when it starts coming out of the top it's full you put the cap back on the top one then remove the bottle or pump on the bottom one and quickly put that screw back in.

The bottom cap should be real close to the skeg.

Yes, I'm a moron... It's funny cuz I swear I looked at that exact spot, but was able to find it...

All changed... Oil was dark, but didn't have the normal water contaminated color... I'll have to check it after the first run next year. Don't really know when the last time it was changed, so I'll have to keep an eye on it next year... Don't know what color the oil was when it was put in, so at least now I know what to look for :shock:

Now time for a tune-up. Wiring, and plugs to be changed...

Kodiak,

The oil is usually a golden colour :D :D .Did you get the pump because Wallyboss is right in saying it works great. :D :D .I picked one up and it never went smoother. I can recall years ago doing it on my 9.9 Johnson with the nozzle on the top of the bottle and more oil ended up on the ground then in the lower unit. :evil: :evil:.

Kodiak did u have a pump???? If not do yourself a favor go to CTC get one now and next year and all the years after that i'm sure that you will
thank me. and Scumking

there not even $10.00 you just screw it on to your oil bottle and leave it on.

Well what I did was put the bottom screw in, and fill from the top, hence allowing gravity to do it's job... I spun the prop by hand, and tapped the unit with a rubber mallet, which should have gotten rid of air pockets, and once the oil stopped going in, and pouring out, I figured it was full ;)

I know what color it's supposed to be ;) But like I said, it didn't really look like water contamination, it looked more the the oil was well used, and since this motor is new to me as of this summer, I changed the oil and after the first or second use next year, I'll take a look at it, to make sure that it's not taking water...

Now on to the wiring! ;)

Not sure how the hell I am going to fill from the bottom...

What kind of pump are you guys talking about? Pics?

Must be filled by the bottom fer sure....

On my 20....I just squeeze the heck out of the oil tube til it starts coming out the top hole....

Can someone post a pic of one of those pumps?

Good point RJ,

I usually end up wasting half the bloody oil when I do it by squeezing.

The pump sounds interesting..

Here ya go Rob....you can getem at CT. About 10 bucks. Just unscrew the cap off the oil bottle, screw on the pump and you're ready to go! This one has a yellow pressure tip. The best ones have the screw in tip that go right into the hole in the foot.

HI GUYS...............i did use that plastic screw pomp,,,a cople off time ,,,there ok,,,,,,,,,but i did broke one or two,,,,


I baught one frome PRINCES AUTO 2 week ago,,,,,,,,,,,its perfect,,,,,the tube is longer,,,and the screws are in metal,,,,,,,,,,and extra screws and adapter,,,,very very nice outfit compare to that plastic one,,,,,and it was arour 8,50$...........

and there different color off oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,golden and some bleue one,,,,but the first time i saw that last year,,,,,


if its coffee color,,,,,mabe your oil was gloden but there water in it,,

if its clear bleue,,,,it was the bleue one,,,but still water in it,,,


but guys take a look at that pump,,,,,its a good one,,,,,,,,
