Price is not a factor as you get what you pay for.If your serious about buying a flasher,you might want to look at other features that make it what they are today...You have to think of the conditions you put the unit through and the amount of usage you will get out of it each winter. If you are a stationary angler that just likes to hit the ice to set up a few tip-ups and socialize in a single area, I dont see why you would need a flasher, as a mobile angler in search of active fish would put this to use as soon as they punch first holes.It would be nice to see more standard features on Vexilar units such as the swingarm for your tranducer, and a soft pack like Marcums flashers come with.Its a personal preference, and you would have to see a flasher next to a LCD screen to see the true meaning of what this product does.All I can say is it will put more fish on the ice.I am glad I went with Vexilar this year Again you get what you pay for, and both Marcum and Vexialr make high quality units that should last a lifetime if used in the proper way...

That's exactly what I do most of the time. As for the flasher appearance, it is mostly matter of personal choice.

My point is - your fishfinder, no matter whether it is flasher or LCD,
is just a tool. It helps to catch fish, but it doesn't catch fish by itself. Most of the time you do. No matter which one you have (or can afford) - use it, you will not regret it.

I have used an older Eagle on the ice before for depth not for ''fish finding'' purposes....With a flasher I can some what see how fish react to my jig, and also know where fish are in the water column.....I have yet to see someone on the ice with a LCD screen unit this year so I can't say anything bad bout them.Someone using a flasher for the first time would have to get use to it, but will eventually find it to be an esential tool that will put more fish on the ice.If a LCD unit is your preference than go for it Good luck on the ice regardless

To see where fish are in the water column you don't need a flasher,
any unit will do. As for fish reaction, you will be much better watching your strike indicator, not the screen . Anyway, I had this discussion
flashers vs. LCDs a couple years ago on iceshanty.com and heard all the arguments...

I still think that a flasher is much better than lcd fish finder, I've used both and the vex is more realtime than LCD some Lcd u can speed up but still won't be realtime. Any LCD that i've tried would n't be able to pick up a 1/64th oz jig just off bottom, my vex can. and by keeping an eye on the flasher you can see if the fish is right under you or just on the edge of the cone (Transducer).

If anybody wants to argue just put one beside the other and you'll quickly find out.

I totally agree with Wallyboss on this one. Put them side by side and there is no comparison. I even bought the transduceer for my bow mount trolling motor when I am going jigging for walleye and Lake Trout. My LCD gets turned off!

Thanks nighttroller, I was going to ask if you could rig a vex to use for jigging walleye while in a boat.

Is there a separate transducer you have to buy or do you use the one that comes with the unit?

I did not vote either I have Vex and a MarCum, but use the MarCum all the time now.
It is interesting to see the Vexilar next to any LCD, but even more interesting to see the much loved Vexilar next to the MarCum LX-5, joco and I had the two side by side last weekend and with the LX-5 on the super fine scale you could see much finer detail than on the Vex.

sorry to everyone with a Marcum flasher. At the time I dident think to list Marcum and Vexilar. The poll is more or less just to see who uses either a flasher or LCD fishfinder.

Is our french buddy Joco kicking himself yet Iceman for going Vexilar instead of Marcum .? ROTFLMAO . To tell you the truth the LX-3 with its moveable zoom will also give you more definition than the Vex at anything up over 6ft off bottom when it wants and will equal it or do more in the bottom 6ft too . Thats what is nice with the LX-5 is that you can either zoom an area and see the rest in normal or you can also use SFL which basically translates to zoom on the whole screen . Not that the FL-8 or FL-18 are bad but you do get so much more advanced features with the Marcum line for less money . All anyone has to do is set them side by side on the ice and turn them on then look at the price tags . Look at the soft pack,the charginging system,then compare what they each do . It's an immediate no brainer for most .

Bender, I bought the transducer for the vex designed for the trolling motor but I just use the Gentz pack on the deck of my boat so I don't have it permanently mounted. Since I primarily fish for bass in shallow water I use the LCD for depth and structure and I like it for that more than the flasher. When I am jigging in deeper water for potentially suspended fish I love the flasher. The LCD is permamnently mounted on the bow of my boat.
