Yes the otehrs offer some slightly better features, but not essential. I do recommend the "S" cable (an extra cost) if you go this route. It cuts interference in shallower waters.
The big thing with the units that have the zoom capabilities is that more of the guess work is taken out . Sure the Fl-8's will get the job done but often if your looking at a bottom hugging fish you see just a flickering on your screen where a unit such as the Fl-18 or the Marcums will show you the separation in a defined line . Also say you see a red blob of a line higher in the water column if its smelt indicating its a big fish without zoom but with a Marcum you can zoom that area and it will show you separate,defined lines indicating its smaller baitfish not a big fish at all . I say its like having two wheel drive compared to 4 wheel drive . 4 wheel drive may not always be needed but sure nice to have when you do .
