Power Pro question;

Okay, so When I was spooling up my reels last night, I noticed something Odd.

I bought a 150yd spool of 10lb test Power Pro, which says its aprroximate diameter equivalency is 2lb test. But, as I'm spooling up my first reel, which says it can hold 150 yds of 2lb test line, I only got half way through my spool of power pro. Literally, because I spooled up another reel with the remainder from the spool I bought.

Both are spooled to around 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the spool on the reel, which I was always told was around where you want to stop anyways.

I also kept a reasonable amount of pressure while spooling my reels, so It shouldn't be way too loose.

Has anyone else ever noticed this before? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Yeah the diameter of Power Pro is never as thin as they say.. I noticed that with all braids. I think they measure it without the coating.

Last year was my 1st year using power pro and I had 150 yards which my reel says was the length for the dia and I was over spooled before I ran out.

Didn't end up caring too much because I very quickly became a power pro fan.

I'll know better this year.

Hmm, maybe you're right BBR, that would probably account for a larger diameter.

I just found it odd that there was that much of a difference, since it basically doubled the diameter of the line at with the 10lb test.

Big Sim: as well as the coating adding diameter to the Power Pro, reel companies tend to over estimate what a reel can hold. I notice this a lot when I am spooling new reels at the store. They never hold what they say they will.

There is also that "fake" power pro line out there. Not sure where it is being sold though. Although you probably don't have this, I'm sure the diameter of this stuff is larger than the true power pro.

Thank toobinator, I always sort of susupected that, it always seemed like so much line to fit into such a small space, especially on my ultralights.

As for the fake stuff, I bought it at CT so I hope it's not and for the price of the stuff I'd be er.... realy **&(^&^ cheesed off, so to speak.

Guys,

I was wondering if any of you noticed the color change in the power pro line. It's a nice dark moss green when I start the season and ends up in a light green flu color...what's up with that. Anyone know of any braid that does not lose it's color?

I think I saw a post a few weeks ago about fading color in power pro, I think someone mentioned PLine? as one which doesn't fade... I'll take a look and see if I can find the post..

I just bought some power pro, first time using it and with all the positive talk regarding power pro i thought what the heck- give'r a try. I did check the box to see if it was the fake stuff but it's okay.Now I just have to wait for the soft water. Can't wait for spring but there is still some ice fishing to do before then. "Good things come to those who wait"

If I can throw my 2-cents in. It's not so much the reel manufacterers as much as it is the line companies. There is no set standard for monofilament line diameter vs lb test. A company can produce fishing line as thick as cable call it 2 lb test line and as long as it doesn't brake under the 2 lb rating it's good. For those of you that have used the tough lines ie Berkley XT (extra tough) although the package says 6 lb or 8lb test. In reality the line is the equivalent to 12lb and 16 lb test. That's why for IGFA line class and other world records, you must send in 90ft (I think) of the line used to catch the potential record. They will test the line to ensure that it is actually the lb test you claim. In other words you use XT 8 lb test line,catch a 32 lb Northern Pike (you think you caught a world record for the line class of 8 lb) but after testing you are told the the line class record for 16 lb test line is 39 lb. This puts the rod & reel companies behind the eight ball. You can see putting 6lb test tough line on an ultra light rod & reel maybe within the restrictions of the rod & reel but far exceeds the actual line recomendations of said products. I've found that alot of casting will leave a green fuzz around the spool and line feeder. It's common that the line has to "break in" I haven't found any change in performancewhen that happens , it just gets more pliable. When I spool up and use it for a couple of seasons I'll re spool the same line but reverse it so the worn line is next to the spool ,use it for a couple more years and then change it all together
