Musky Guide?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Almost everyday out, I made myself a promise that is my favorite hobby was becomming to much of a job I would quit. I am enjoying it more and more very year.

I certainly ain't doing this for the money like Steve alluded too, my wife has a good job and as long as I am happy and pay my small share of the bills it's all good.

Having to go out and paint ( my part time winter job ) the last couple of weeks has me wanting spring to come even more then just for the fishing alone.

Guides and spots

Post by mikemicropterus »

:? New kid I am a guide and will take you for muksie if you want. The whole dilemma surrounding spots can get very emotional. I know that when I am in a tournament and I find another angler fishing "my spot" it can mess with your mind. Just because you show a client a spot does not mean it is ruined or it will be overfished. I hope we all understand that fish are habitual creatures and that information was what got me to this spot in the first place. I think the issue comes down to personal integrity and like opinions we all have them, some are educated some are irrational. I think that a giude will always hold something back and should with local anglers. I have a good success rate with muskies because of the time I have spent on the water prefishing. I went once with a friend who was a member of MC and we boated a 55, a38 and a29 and we had 4 follows and he said that was a OK day. I went back to the AREA ten years later and landed a 44 that hit right beside the boat. Now I know of five different bodies of muskie water that turn on at different times so unless the client duplicate everything exactly their chances of success are limited still by their lack of experience. I have even fish areas where that were just trolled and caught fish in front of the guide. (Muskie Jake on the Rideau) You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I guide for muskies at two times of the year, opening week and October. I giude for walleye, crappie and pike in the spring, catfish in June and ten bass when they open. This year I am going to try for some sturgeon(Ottawa River) and I have a customer who wants to go for gar-pike(June)

steve-hamilton wrote:CCB, with the price guides charge for the St L and Ottawa, if your not getting their best effort....well....i dont know what to say...

many, including myself, consider those prices highway robbery. the only way i'd consider paying it, was if i knew i was getting the best chance at a trophy fish...

sounds like i'm not going to get that chance anyways....so i guess all we really are doing is paying for a chance to get a fish at a more well known spot.

great.
I agree that I would have to have 100% confidence that I was going to be taken to every spot that guide new could produce a trophy fish, regardless if I am spending $100 or $2000 for the guide. If the guide is true and loves his job and fishing then there isn't a problem.

And Steve, if we go to the Larry or Ottawa River for 3-4 days I bet we could easily catch a trophy on our own....if not, we could go to LSC and do as good or better as any Musky guide :D

$500 a day isn't that expensive when everthing is considered.

You are really paying for the guide's knowledge. You will learn things that you can use for the rest of your life, you will gain confidence in techniques you may have known about earlier, but were relunctant to try, or didn't quite know how to apply on the water.

When you argue about price you are really questioning the value of the guide's knowledge. And no guide wants clients who think that their knowlege isn't worth it.

The fact that the you might catch a fish, or that the guide throws in the boat and equipment, or that the guide provided a day of story telling and entertainment is a bonus.

I know I wouldn't do it. After expenses, its probably worse than minimum wage, and I don't like fishing because I have to.

hi boys..........

500$ might sound like a lot off monney but its not.......compare to all the time you will save lurning,,,,,and buy stuff you dont need......a good guide can explain a lot off stuff you did not even imagine,,,,,,dont forget guys here,we have a lot off people that do fish a lot,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT there is a lot more people that never did fish,or have any fishing equipement etc etc............so for them 500$ is not mutch compare to go at one store and get all that you need,,,,,,,,,,

you just have to have good clothing,,,,and a fishing permit and there you go,,,,,,,,,,,nothing helse,,,,,,,,,it can be a deal.....

we have to see areself in people that never fish........

AND lets say some people do have some $$$$ and they just dont care about the price or monney,,,,,,,they just want to have a big fish picture on the wall at home or at the bureau........at work to show,,,,,so for them 500$ is some pocket change,,,,,,,

IF i had the monney i would try all the guide,,,,to see there tecknic,,,,and what lures,,,rod all equipement there using..........not there spot... ,....

but as now,,,,,,,,,,i never did try one guide,,,,,,,,,,,but might try one for some fishing,,,,in some lakes down ouest off here,,,not in this regions..............

wathever people say.............there always gone to be a demand for guide........its been ages its like that....it wont change......

I shyed away from this thread, mainly for the reason is there are way to many opinions and I'm no guide. Unless you want to factor in that I take a few lads and lasses every year to do battle with a few salmonoids and ask for a cold beer at the end of the day well I'm a guide then

I've taken a few to certain spots over the course, and ask politely, if you ever come back its free water to fish, but plz keep any secret spots to yourself. Thats it. I've seen way to many area's get a ars whoopin from people coming back with 10 of thier friends to pound water, which in turn blows my area's, but heck I can walk and find more, I've done it for 11yrs.

In my case...... You want to catch fish (Floatin per say) The paths you walk or the trampeled brush wasn't put there by the almighty!!! People make the time to find new water, you don't wanna walk, you don't come fish with me, I'm all about searchin for new water and possibly untouched water.

This is off topic to Muskie guys, but I can sympathize with alot of whats been posted on here.

Would I pay 500$ to go out for a day.............. No way! But thats me. I'm not sayin its not worth it by any means at all, its a buisness and owners have expenses!!!! You gotta pay to get to the beer store right? 3$ on the bus, 5$ in gas for your car, or walkin in the cold, you pay for what you want!

Charters do thier best to make the client happy, and if your not happy in a 55K boat, with top of the line equip for a day, well don't go with a guide, its simple!

Don't bring your friends back to where you got a trophy, take what you SPENT 500+$ for and put it to use elsewhere even on that water body or another, but your not only payin for the boat, gear, and so on, you are payin for KNOWLEDGE! If you figure you can read a mag and become the next KVD good luck, it takes time and money to better yourself in any sport.

I dunno if I made any sense, I'm goin up north to Kesagami in 7days, and I'm just babbelin here

anyone wanna go float, drop me a line, I have gear and exp, I won't run ya 500$ but I'll sure do my best to put ya onto fish. Either way you owe me a beer

Finally, Greg, amazing site and pics bro!!!! That site is one of the best guide sites I've seen!

Hi FLOATFISHIN. Interesting post as usual. You wrote: "Don't bring your friends back to WHERE you got a trophy.. You are payin for KNOWLEDGE!"............Boy Float, I agree, that sounds like the ethical thing to do. Too bad most fishermen are opportunistic liars
Anyway, I can't figure out why some people are trying to compare the Kawarthas to big water trophy guiding. Honestly, I don't see why any semi-skilled muskyhunter would EVER need a guide on the Kawarthas...why spend the money when you can have a good time finding them for yourself?? They're really not overly hard to find in these waters. The same can not be said for trophy muskies in big water. Can you say: needle in a haystack????? :o
