spinning vs baitcasting

I have 2 Shimano Citicas and they are by far the best reel for the money that I have ever owned. They came out with a new style for 2006, but if you can find a new 2005 I would go for it. They are 1-piece aluminim frame and very strong.
bought a 2005 new for 100 at the fishing show and you should be able to find one for that price.
Also have a BPS Extreme reel and it doesn't really compare to a citica, but is a good reel for the money 69+tax and also 1 piece aluminum frame... make sure you don't get a graphite frame reel or you will be replacing it soon after you get it.
As for a rod I would stick with a Shimano Compre and Clarus for a good inexpensive rod in the medium to medium heavy 6'6 to 7' length

I tried the Bass Pro XPS series baitcaster last year for $60 US and I've got to admit that they are great. I've got Shimanos, Diawas, Pfleugers, taht are more expensive reels but those BPs are exceptional for the money. I think from time to time BP offers a rod reel combo for about $80 with this reel that can't be beat.

i have a general idea now of what im looking for and i think when i actually get to bass pro and play with some ill make my final decision... has to feel right...

dont get me wrong i love my spinning gear and its not gettin retired its just gettin a new baby brother.... i want the ability to through big baits on a strong line so i want a baitcaster.....

and yes go zebco

I would have to say that bang for the buck you should consider a round Abu C3 as the other person suggested, they are well priced at many stores in the area. It is a very simple design that performs great and I have had very few backlashes with them. I know that Ed has some good deals on the basic Shimanos as well.

I own 1 baitcasters but many spinning reels. I find it hard to get used to the bc.
I try for a while then get a birds nest, get frusrated and switch.
I need to get into the back yard and practise I guess.

bottom feeder - keep at it. really, once you get it, you will wonder why you didn't make the switch sooner.

I'll be hitting the yard (well, park near my place, I don't have a yard) fairly soon... I just got mine last year, so I'll basically be starting from the beginning (turn up the resistance and the braking system to limit birdsnests as much as possible). Slowly start to loosen those things as you get more comfortable (I emphasize slowly). And unlike spinning gear where I can "day dream" a little when casting... well, each time your mind wanders while casting with a baitcaster chances are you'll get a nest.

Just remember, it even happens to the best of them every once in a while! Cheap 17lb mono is great to practice with.

Its true I would have some great casts but would want to put it out where a spinning reel would cast to and whirr-- fouled--frustrating

Norm,

From my experience.. Mono is the hardest thing to cast with a baitcaster. Get yourself some braid or fireline.. anything NON-mono will make the WORLD of difference.. some may agree.. some may not... just speaking from my experience...

I got my first baitcaster when I was 13 and I did learn on mono. I spent many hours at the park casting nuts and bolts. Had I started with braid.. I probably could have cut the learning time in half.

As for the braided vs mono (in regards to casting).. it's like the difference between night and day, black and white... you get it.....
