motor advice PLEASE

Post by orrsey »

Hey guys,
Im going on Monday to look at a 25hp for my 14 foot alluminum. Its an 86 evinrude which has been in an older guys garage for 2 years and not running. I asked him if there was anything wrong with it and he said not a thing. He said that he has the motor and a trailer but no boat. He wants $600 for it or hes probably just going to by a boat for it. I am not that mechanically inclined so I am looking for advice on what kind of things to ask about and what kind of things to look for. Any help would be great!
thanks

Blake:

Generally, a clean looking motor means it has been well cared for. Look for a clean finish, not too many scrapes, a clean prop, etc.

On the two strokes, compression is everything. A few pounds difference on a two cylinder is nothing to be alarmed by, but more than 6 pounds I would be suspect.

If you can, bring muffs and start it up. Might want to pull the plugs and spray some engine storage lube in it, then reinstall plugs.

Good Luck,
Soggy.

I would go with what Soggy. The only thing I would add is ask to see the service history on the motor. Ask if he has winterized the motor every year and when was the last time he changed the plugs and lower unit oil. Was he the original owner?
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
Cheers

hey Blake,

does this mean you found the 14 footer you were looking for?
Good stuff... I'm still trying to figure out how I could manage to get one! Where there's a will there's a way I guess! :)

Motor

Post by Haybay Larry »

I would also like to see the motor running before I bought it. Also I am wondering what style of boat you are putting a 25 h.p. motor on a 14' boat. If it is a standard fishing boat i think that motor would be overkill for it.
I once had a 14' boat with an 18 h.p. motor and it would fly! I'm just trying to keep things in perspective....Larry

I had a 25 evinrude back in the early 80's. Mine was on a 16 fiberglass fishing boat and worked real nice.
They used the same motor for 25, 30 and I believe 35 horsepower, just changed the carbueration..They were built tough and I would not be afraid of it unless it's obviously been used hard.

If you don't buy this thing would u let me know where it is? I may be interested.

Regards
Brian

Hey guys,
thanks to everyone who wrote with their thoughts. Larry the boat that it is going on is rated for a 25hp. I have seen a 25 on it and its still very safe. I do understand where your coming from though, little boats like that with motors too big can be a bad scene. I ended up buying the motor, when I got there the guy had it all covered in his garage and it looked very clean. He had it properly winterized before he put it away as well. Lucky for me the guy selling lived 2 blocks from where he had it maintained and where he vought it as well. So I went down there and they assured me that before it was put away it was a great little motor. After some more looking around I decided to take the risk and I bought it. As soon as I got home I dropped it off at my local marina where I know the mechanic and told him"just look it over from top to bottom, make sure its o.k. and giver a grease and lube". Went back in yesterday and he said "shes done" and I replied...."as in meaning what? for good? nope its runs good, just needed a carborater kit because it had been sitting around for a couple years. All in all after I bought it and had it in the shop getting it ready for the upcoming season it cost me about $750. I thought it to be an alright deal, I mean at leaest Im up and running now....
