Pakenham any good?
Has anyone ever tried to fish the rapids at Pakenham? Specifically under the stone bridge and the tail out? Was thinking it would be a good smallie/walleye spot. I would like to try it this summer.

I use to fish below the rapids at pakenham a few years back for walleyes. If the water levels is up it can be pretty good. As close as you can get to the rapids SAFELY has been good. A couple small pikes every outing as well. Casting cranks further down towards the bend has produced some bigger eyes. All we used below the rapids was jigs and minnows. Bring lots of jigs thought, lots of rocks and hang ups.
Later in the season its got a lot of smaller smallies in the same area.
Hope that helps.

Here are the special regs for this particular stretch of water.
Mississippi River - Pakenham Twp., between the falls in the Town of Almonte and upstream side of bridge on Lanark County Road 20. (Division 10) Fish sanctuary - no fishing from Mar. 1 - 1st Mon. in June.

I just drove by the bridge and into the park this afternoon. Actually I may even go fishing for crappies this weekend as the water is not nearly as wild as it usually is this time of the year. Still too busy to fish from shore or in the river. You'll have to wait for another month. I've never caught anything of size upstream from the bridge but everything that wiggles below, usually in my canoe. It tends to get too shallow and warm later in the summer. Fish the area beside the still and moving waters.
