LURE RETRIEVAL

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

LURE RETRIEVAL

Post by Badger Shark »

Does anyone use the device that LeBarons sells for retrieving lures? I keep being tempted to buy it but I would like to know if any of you have used it and does it really work. Is it easy to use and can you use it on just plain hooks. Its about 11 bucks, not bad if it realy works. Appreciate any insight on this device.

They are a complete waste of cash. I have tried them several times and have come to this conclusion. They may, and I stress, may work, if you were stationed directly over the snagged lure (which totally rules out any shore fishing situations) and if there were next to no current (which rules out most river fishing situations). The problem is, the contraption that is supposed to retrieve the lure has to slide down on your line with enough speed to clip onto your lure (well, actually, it has to clip onto your swivel, snap or leader so again, if you tie your line on direct, it wont work because it has nothing to clip on to when it reaches your lure). If you're fishing against a current, the water flow prevents the device from hitting the swivel with enough force to clip on to it. If your line is at an angle and not straight up and down, again, the device wont slide down the line with enough force to clip onto your swivel.

We found a lure releasing device at Canadian Tire. Its simply a large lead weight that slides down your line and smashes the lure from where it is lodged. They paint it up and make it look like a fish, but it is only a weight that slides down the line.
We attach our plainer board reels to the weight and let it rip on down the line, then pull it in and hopefully the lure will be released.
Of course it does not work every time but for $5 if it only releases half of the time I figure I am ahead of the game
