Sweet catch, TFS!

What weight rod & what fly?

Finally got a change to post some more details.

Well yesterday I got the chance to introduce one of my buddies to fly fishing. Ive just recently got him into fishing. He's really getting into it. Its incredible how fast he's picking it up. After one outing he can cast pretty good. Didn't need much help figuring it out either. He's already told me that he prefers fly fishing. But anyways about the fish. Well after giving my buddy a hand and showing him the ropes I waded out a bit further to give him some room to casts. I decided to fish a big deer hair popper that I had tied last week on my 8 weight since the weeds where showing on the waters surface due to the low waters levels (lowest ive seen them so far this year) Right away I ended up missing a nice fish due to my inattention ( i was keeping an eye on my buddies casting) Not five casts later though a big wake shot out towards my fly and inhaled it. I instantly knew it was a very good fish. The next thing i know its doing cartwheels right infront of me. I was frantacaly trying to keep it from jumping. No sooner had the jumping subsided that he hunkered down and headed straight for a nearby patch of weeds. He managed to get himself buried deep in it. At this point i frantically started to wade out towards him fearing that he would manage to get away. By this point my buddy was also wading out frantically to give me a hand landing this fish. Of course I just happenned to have left my net at home that day. So finally i reached the weed patch and just as i did he came free of the weeds and I managed to swing him out towards me. After a few quick lipping attempts I managed to nab him. As I lipped him I realized how lucky I had been to land him. The hook was lodge on the very edge of his lip in a fleshy area which could have easily pulled free. Luckily I had forgotten to de-bard my fly (I always do, I usually do it right when i tie my flies) I credit this error with enabling me to land this fish. I feel certain it would have pulled free where it not for the barb. I coudln't believe how big he was. Most fish on that strech of water average about a pound or so at most. He was a solid fish at least 2 1/2lbs. Very wide and fat.
