Hey Dan,
I was this (some tiny distance) far from attending SSFC myself (same program). Work, family, etc... kept me from taking the step (I was actually leaning towards Sault College)... in any case, I'll be curious/interested to hear how things are going and how you enjoy the program.
If you don't mind me asking - how old are you? I'm 31 so it would have been a big step to get into school again after working for so many years...
cheers,
tallpaul

hey tallpaul,
the F&W program here at ssfc has so far been very interesting, although the 1st semester is a common, and very basic introductory towards admitance into the F&W program. 2nd semester is where the fun starts.
I have met many people your age in the program with famillies looking for a career change, most of these people are pursuing a career in the fishing industry.
im 18 by the way,
-you can pm me whenever you have any questions regarding the program

Paul, you'd be very surprised how many people of dif. ages return to school after many years. Depending on the course you might just be the young pup of the group. I can relate though, considering the same thing myself and hey, I'm an old man of 36. Best of luck with the studies and fishing FishManDude....btw, I like that nic!

Fish and wildlife was an awesome program at ssfc, Have you done the compassing trip yet? Thats awesome! Hiking through the bush crossing swamps, if you can, bring a ultralite rod, u can fold up, in your pak, halfway through is a stream, and you should see the salmon running throughit! Its nuts! Algonquin offers the same program i think at its Pembroke campus. I'm on the Woodroffe campus. 31 yrs old, 2 kids and back at school, takinh HVAC, what a year its been!
Don't know if the york is still around in Lindsay, but what a great place!

Fishing Opportunities in the Lindsay area
Hey fish_man_dude, there are many guys from the college that are avid fishermen. Unfortunately there has been very little interest in recent years in organizing them. I graduated from there 10 years ago and we had a 'relatively' active club that targeted all fish species, including steelhead and salmon on Lake Ontario tribs. I would advise you to contact the Student Council to see if there is a club already in place OR throw an add up on some of the community bulletin boards around campus to spark some interest.
I live in the Lindsay area and get out fishing all of the time. I have been busy with tournaments the last few weeks so I have been trying to spend a little down time at home. I would expect the fishing in my life to ramp up again shortly as the fall time is the best time of year on the Kawartha's.
Drop me an email sometime, there is a good core of guys in Lindsay who try to get out from time to time and could use a warm body in the boat
. Email me at: fishbio74@hotmail.com.
Tight lines, Jay
PS - can you swing a net

Tallpaul and others,
I returned to University (to study Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences) at age 30 and although I was typically the oldest in my classes, I really enjoyed it. I think the instructors appreciated a mature student that had been out in the real world and the students were pretty accepting as well. I am very glad I did it and would encourage anyone thinking about returning to school to investigate it further.
I went to a school in the US where they REQUIRE a minimum of two physical education classes to graduate. These were typically classes taken in the first or sencond year of school, although I waited until the 4th year. I was twice the age of everyone else in those two classes and as you might imagine it was awkward at times.
fish_man-dude,
Good luck in your classes, they should be really fun.
