Monster through the ice

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Monster through the ice

Post by Rex Mundi »

Check out this article about a 72 inch 102 pound sturgeon brought through the ice with a spear.

Great fish! Why they wanna spear such big creatures I don't know seeing as they are obviously not going back in the water. According to the article they are getting alot this size and are taking away from the population. They should learn to practise catch and release with hooks and not spears. If they keep taking away from such a prehistoric creature it won't be long before their extinct.

I really don't condone this either. You know when spear fishing that ultimately the prey will perish. Such a great fish.... :cry:

Let's hope that at the very least he will have it mounted, if not, it's simply senseless.

*sigh* Still haven't nailed a sturgeon yet myself. One that size would be a catch of a lifetime. Sheesh, it wouldn't even enter my mind to kill it. I'd gladly just catch a glimpse of it and lose it, rather then that.

A fish you know will perish and one that will survive and you choose it's fate are 2 dif things but incredible specimens, regardless of species should be released.

Truly sad, especially given the slow growth and maturity/reproductive rate of the sturgeon. I don't even want to think about how old that particular 72" er was, let alone the 12 out of 700 :!: :shock: that topped the 100 lb. mark. 700?! I highly doubt they are being eaten, or all are mounted, nor would all be for scientific study. Slaughter plain and simple.

Kinda makes you put things in perspective when some fishermen keep a few for the table and are criticized for it, when a complete slaughter like this is allowed. Meanwhile a sturgeon biologist with the state Department of Natural Resources looks on, while the season continues through Feb. 25 or when the harvest limit is reached.

Makes the blood boil and I hope puts into perspective an honest fisherman taking a fresh meal given this comparison.

thanks for sharing this link...REX MUNDI :wink:

I do love sturgeons fishing...its a huge rush.a real swiming machine,,that fight will outfight a lot off other fish.

spear fishing that way.i wont say i approve or not......its legal to do so.

but i do have to say it very good to eat.the sturgeons meath is one off the best wen smoked....i have smoke some in the past.......just great.

i do hope they do eat it.

because sutrgeons take a long time to get to maturity to spond,eggs...

and they have to be very old to get that size (in the 100pounds).,,,and just finish there life spear in the back... :? .

but i do some spear fishing myself.not that kind i go after fish,wlhile swiming more a sport.(but its been like 3 years aprox i did not done it).but we keep what we get and we eat it.....and sturgeons is iligal to spear in quebec any way off spearing is iligal.

Thanks Joco, this is just what I was looking for to put it into perspective.

sexual maturity in females is reached between 14 and 33 years, most often from 24-26 years; and, 8 to 12 years for males (but may take up to 22 years);

female lake sturgeon spawn once every 4 to 9 years while males spawn every 2 to 7 years;

spawning occurs on clean, gravel shoals and stream rapids from April to June in preferred water temperatures of 55-64oF;

female lake sturgeon lay 4,000 to 7,000 eggs per pound of fish;

growth rates are quite variable throughout its range and depend on temperature, food availability, and water quality; and,

the typical life-span of lake sturgeon is 55 years for males and 80-150 years for females.

*Given these facts, one can imagine what would happen to the population, given 700 are taken away. We'll be dead and gone by the time those 700 will be returned back to the fishery. I doubt the annual spear fishing derby of sturgeon will stop so....you do the math.

In trying to find the facts, I stumbled upon many sites that talk of the same. It seems spear fishing sturgeon is a far greater and larger sport in the states then I would have ever imagined. Hell, I didn't even know it was a "sport."

I'm clapping for the Wolfman, 'cause this Wolfe is in agreement with his opinion. To me, it's an absolute shame.

That's a rediculous derby, it's unsustainable and an irresponsible use of the resource. I don't understand how it's allowed. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Rex, it's something to think about for sure.

What I dont get is they say they are open season until they reach their cull limit....So they actually say that there are 2000 or something to catch and kill??? Is the lake that full that they need to do that???

I knew this would be an interesting thread.

My opinion is that this type of thing should not be called fishing as it is nit fishing it is fish hunting. If it is treated as hunting and managed properly like hunting for Dear, Moose or Bear than it should be OK.

This reminds me of Sturgeon fishing back in Alberta and Saskatchewan where Sturgeon fishign was treated differently then other sport fishing. In Alberta to fish for Sturgeon you needed to get a Sturgeon tag just like a dear tag and you would be allowed to catch 1 or 2 per year.
