I hope or was hoping to fish the derby this coming weekend.....but bit concerned now re the ice conditions there this year. Was hoping by now the ice was good enough to take my truck on.
BTS...is the ice good enough to stand up to an ATV?
If not can anyone give me some pointers as to places I can access on the lake and walk to a spot on foot...preferbly where I might see some sort of fishy action?
Baitcasters Derby
.
I wouldn't tell anybody that ice is safe to drive on or not. I will tell you that there is at least 16 inches of good ice anywhere I have checked. Check with Crystal or Mike at Baitcasters as they will likely have a better knowledge of the ice conditions.
I don't think I will be driving my truck across the lake this year.

WHAT HAPPENED ON MISSISSIPPI LAKE DOESN'T STAY THERE!!!!
For those of you who don’t know – or don’t want to say - it was our truck that went through on Mississippi Lake this year. Mike is the last person that will drive on unsafe ice and he always checks the thickness before putting a shack out or driving on the lake. He has been doing so since he was a kid. That being said, the ice conditions early on this year were scary. You would have 12 inches of ice in one spot and 5 inches in another – not necessarily very far away. The mild weather coupled with freezes and thaws and the high level of the lake and then it being lowered after ice was on all contributed to these conditions.
It was 3 weeks ago that the truck went down. We changed our derby from the 10th to the 17th to give the lake an extra week for the ice to thicken. Like BTS says there is lots of ice in most places. However we will not be driving a vehicle on it again this year and a lot of people have made the same decision – better safe than sorry. There are however lots of snowmobiles and ATVs driving on the lake and crossing from Grasshopper and coming across the lake to our place for bait and supplies.
Again, that being said – you are responsible for knowing the ice conditions of the lake you are on. We will be advising people not to drive their vehicle on the lake but the ultimate decision is up to them. If you encounter a slushy spot – stay away!
If anyone needs any more info let us know. There is a picture of the truck once it made it out of the lake in the shop – not a pretty site – so for anyone coming out to the derby you will see firsthand the damage that was done. We certainly provided some entertainment for a couple of days for the neighbours with the divers and towtrucks and chainsaw operators!
Mike and I hope to see many of you at the derby on Saturday. Our advice – rent a shack, stay warm and don’t have to worry about transportation!!!!
Good fishing all!!!
