Having had many different styles of huts I really would rank this on high.

Granted it does not have the highest level of build quality but it is portable, light, very quick to setup and holds decent heat. (As you see in the picture, with the heater I use it gets insainly hot) One of the members had one of these and said the windows shattered in the cold.
I can see how this would happen as the plastic does feel brittle in the cold. But if this ever happens, I know 3M makes a clear plastic material which is impervious to cold.

I know how good clams are as many of my friends have them. But when push comes to shove, if ya want to hike deep in the hills of the highlands, Clams are out of the question. This golf club size pack for the sub zero works great.

I have the 4 person model which is perfect for 2-4 people. I am 5'11" and can fully stand up in it. Very nice feature.

Redhead,

Thanks for the critique on the Sub Zero product. There's nothing like first-hand experience versus a sales pitch. I'm a big fan of portability as well because my car doesn't fit any of the larger and less portable units like Clams or Fish Traps or products from HT.

I'm curious, does the Sub Zero unit come with ice cleats to fasten that baby down? It looks like it could become a sail in high wind.

I too am in the same boat as you regarding room for a larger portable in my car. I received a 2 man sub-zero as a gift. While I can't see fishing two people in it its great for one person. It does come with screw in ice anchors which work pretty well. I'd suggest a small cordless drill to get the anchors started though. It really speeds up the set-up.

Great tips Lefty! Thanks for the feedback on the two man Sub Zero hut. Looks like only myself and my skinny seven year old son would fit in it.

That is hands down the biggest perch I have ever seen. Congrats! This is one of my favorite posts this winter.

I am heading back there tomorrow for the morning bite.

Doing some research I have discovered the Ontario record for perch is 2.25 lbs.

I really should have taken measurements of this perch as you never know how close it was. Any Comments?

I believe there is a chance this lake may contain the new record. I can feel it.

Tomorrow.. forget the trout.. I am going all day for DA BIG PERCH!

Well after a full day of fishing (5am-6pm) only managed to pull out a couple smaller perch.

But did grab 2 nice size brookies. I wanted to take pictures yet didn't notice the camera batteries were dead... sorry bout that gents

I am not giving up on this spot, and am heading out again sometime this week. Bought some new jigs I hope will work well.

Great report fella...larger perch aren't easy to come by in this area if it's even this area you are fishing in... :lol:

About your question of Canadian record....Is the perch in the photo that you are holding one of the two on the ice with the trout?...if so...that bait is 3 inches long...which roughly puts those two on the ice in the 12-13 inch range....a 12 to 13 inch perch unless it is overloaded with roe would barely make the 1 pound mark...I caught a 14 inch with a 10 inch girth last year...it weighed 1.4 pounds....I was blown away by it and it sits mounted here all my wall as I type...but not even close to a record fish.....to break the record you'd be looking at a fish in the range of 15-16 inches and huge girth....
