Sort of non-fishing related, but definitely a seasonal topic for the ones who dread to see Winter pass and the ones who love to see Spring on the horizon. I took the young son for a walk (run) today and visited the Rideau Falls after they had dynamited the river to avoid the annual Spring floods this week. If you've never seen this annual ritual; the spectacle of the city workers blowing up the ice it's pretty cool and shakes the house like an earthquake if you live by it.
A few observations first before the pictures . I've lived along this river for three Winters now and this is the thinnest I've seen the ice so far. The last two years three foot plus sections were common-place. This year they look to be just over two feet thick. I think everyone has observed this as well on the local lakes as we haven't come close to burying our augers to the motors this year in Ottawa. On the plus side it's been a lot less work to drill, but I wonder how quickly things will ice out this year.
Here's what it looks like:
Pretty cool, huh! Just a reminder to everyone who loves the hardwater to get out as much as you can before the season is over.
Boys, I gotta laugh at the seasonal observations and the trendspotting that accompanies. About 10 or 11 yrs ago I was fishing open water and catching walleye right by that very spot. Three winters ago I spent 8 weekends fishing a shak and wondering if the auger would break through without an extension. Ya hafta take the weather as it comes. Some winters are memorable for lots a snow and ice or cold some are warm and dry. Lets face it we've seen them all and all that can be said for sure is you never know.
Those are really neat pictures. Thanks for posting .
The ice is thinner this year due to the strong el-nino effect that was here in December. The upside is that this warm spell usually arrives in mid-late February and causes freezing rain, downed power lines, branches crushing my car, etc. Thankfully we were spared this this winter .
Fishhit, buddy, I couldn't agree with you more.
Don't read too far into this post as an endorsement for global warming...I'm not an environmental alarmist by any stretch of imagination. I thought the shots were cool and related it to two previous years...that's all. I agree climate variability is the norm...no arguments there. The message was the season will be shorter "this year".
Perhaps you'd like to begin a seperate post on this subject...it would be a juicy one for sure especially during cabin-fever month
That's really neat, I had no idea they broke it up that way! Now I'm getting really excited for spring! I've got a new reel that I'm dieing to break in!
Bring on the warmth, the end of the cold cant come quick enough for me, sorry Joco! After all I invested in a boat and I am dying seeing it in the driveway covered up. But I am not naive, I know winter aint done with us yet. We will get another dumping of snow and another cold spell, probably right at the May long weekend as usual.
I'm old & memory MAY BE STARTING TO GO. But I seem to recall some Very cold winters & some not so cold ones.. As for GLOBAL WARMING I do recall during the last ICE AGE setting around in my SUV reving it up to warm the earth. I think thats how we ended the ICE AGE & brought about this global warming.. But I'm old & I'm sure science knows it was all them Hydro Plants that really ended the ICE AGE
Amen Ratso. I wasn't trying to suggest on your part an endorsement of gobal warming from your post. There's just so much weather speculation that a guy can take what with every paper, tv, and newsmagazine blathering on about it. By the way those were great shots of the ice fall at green island. Nature has a way of making a great display no matter the temp or season.

fishhit,
I also find myself right of center on the topic and disagree with at least some of the science presented. When the science turns into a cult, religion (everyone chirping the same story line), or for political gain I become very suspicious. Carbon credits look like a scheme to redistribute wealth vice control CO output...
Here's a great link to a site focussing on causes of climate cycles called paleo climates. Check the ones out regarding solar cycles...that's the key: http://www.jhu.edu/~eps/paleoguide/variation.html.
Done with the shak for sure. I might get out on Sunday for a bit of a fish, and of course I just gotta get up to Palmerston for the10th! It was a pretty good season at Clayton. Too bad bass arn't in season cause a few days I thought maybe I could've won a renagade tournament. Plenty of perch and pike and wallies to keep us busy though!
