This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Do you feel it would be a good idea to consider allowing only Registered Users to view certain Hawk Talk Forums?

Yes, it costs nothing to register, and may provide some method of tracking, should it ever be required.

No, I don't see any benefit to doing this.

I'd actually like to see ALL forums only available to Registered Users.

This is a great board, and while I don't post often, I will post if I feel I have something useful to contribute.
But how would I know it's a great board without "lurking" before I signed up? I don't think most people will register if they can't at least sample the board to get an idea of what it offers. I don't think there are enough benefits to registration-only to make it worth doing.

In my opinion Lurkers don't hurt anyone. all they can do is view and there's no harm in that. Its people that use aliases that cause trouble most of the time. There must be a way to block people from having more that one account.

"But how would I know it's a great board without "lurking" before I signed up?"

Ummmm, take the 2 minute process, sign up, and find out for yourself?

Bobber, i would like to point you to another site, that ran the same model as you guys do here, for many years.....

They too got sick and tired of the lurking, and did the same vote, however, internally amongst the 'owners'.

They decided to do the 'some forums' can be viewed, but anything with any 'meat' required you to register.....

Only to register. ANYONE is allowed to register. You should SEE THE DRAMATIC improvement it has made in the last six months....

New folks are joining ALL THE TIME....and get this, THEY ARE CONTRIBUTING....seriously. its crazy.

The forum designated for "new members to introduce themselves" is one of the busiest forums....and just about all the members that took the time to create a login, and say hello, also take the time to post when they feel like contributing.....

You'll see how many folks really want to 'have a look'. if ya can't be bothered to register, unless you feel the need to lurk first....well....you dont need to 'register' to go to your local tackle shop...

Just some suggestions to get lurkers to join.

Maybe add an option to allow only registered members to read certain posts. This would be decided by the poster. Ex: The poster has an awesome tip and wants to share it but only with registered members. Lurkers will only be able to see the Subject Line, no message body. Need to log in to view entire post.

Searching. Only allow minimum # of hits while searching or only allow lurkers to see five of the X # of hits. If they want to see more, they need to log in. Maybe an extension to this suggestion would be to limit the search date from today to 6 months back except for members of course.

Finally, if the post is multiple pages, only allow lurkers to see the last page. Once more, they need to log in to view the entire post.

I don't see how registering will reduce lurking. I am a registered user with very few posts. I can log in and view all the info in every forum.
Do I qualify for lurker status,even though I am a hat-wearing member of Fish-Hawk.net ?
My gut feeling is that registering will not stop people from lurking, registered or not.

I'd say no. You can see that I am not the most active user here, but I really enjoy reading about others experiences, successes, failures, etc.

I am a registered user and enjoy posting the odd message, question, reply, but I learned a lot from this site prior to registering. I guess you could consider me a "registered lurker" to some degree I guess.

Whoa back here hoss, why all the concern about lurkers - that isn't the problem at all.

The issue is flaming amongst registered users, slander, etc.

How could it be possible to measure anything about a visitor to the site.

Guests can't post.

I try to stay logged in all the time but it seems every week or so I get kicked off and have to sign in again. At any given point in time there are always more guests than registered users on line - but how many are registered and just haven't signed in?

Take a serious deep breath here and consider what you're all proposing - it isn't a lurker issue!!!!!

Like a big ol' fat Muskie, i'm always lurking in the weeds.......waiting to pounce on tid-bits of useless information

Seriously...look how many registered users there are and a huge number of those users don't post anything at all  Then there are the unregistered lurkers who do nothing but lurk anyways.....so whats the diff? I say make em' register and if they don't give some sort of participation per amount of time logged then....deactivate their account.

Now can i please get back to my lurking :?:

Oh......and i would like to see the signature feature reinstated as well. I don't think it should only be for pro anglers, tackle shop owners and outdoor writers......they are not the only ones with plenty of knowledge around here ya know!
