What Knot to use......

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What Knot to use......

Post by malonzi »

Decided to try out some Fireline this year to see what the fuss is all about. I read on pamphlet inside the box and on the web that a palomar knot is the best to use on braided line. I can see it being easy to tie on a hook or smaller crankbait, what what about something like a larger spinnerbait? Or how aabout tieing on a leader? I know it's strong stuff but i refuse to lose $8 X-Raps to toothy critters. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hello malonzi. Well to answer your questions, firstly if you don't want lose $8 X-Raps to toothy critters, then don't throw it... . just kidding. I tie all maybe tackle using nothing but the palomar knot and that includes crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I have never lost a bait due to the knot malfunctioning. It is as far as I'm concerned the strongest knot out there and I have haul large bass out of very heavy cover and it has never broke. As for tying on leader material to braided lines, well I use a barrel swivel and use the palomar knot to secure ends to the swivel. I have not used Fireline, so I don't know how it really performs, I primarily use Power -Pro or XP tuff Line in braid. So all I can say is give it a try. Hope this helps.

Cheers, Frank

I use the palomar knot on both fireline Crystal and power-pro and have been happy with it. Since the crystal is only 4lb the line has broken, not the knot when I have snaged it on a tree on the other side of the bay....the power pro has straightened the hook - the knot and line have held strong.

I use fireline and the Palomar knot most of the time. Works great and has never slipped.

You can tie a Palomar directly onto a large spinner bait, you just have to leave a slightly larger loop to get the spinner bait through. Wastes a little more line but it works.

If you're going for pike, you need a leader. Fireline is strong but a pike can still cut through it. Again... palomar know works great here as well.

Someone posted this link recently. I can't remember who but I liked it and bookmarked it so here you go.

Also the spring Outdoor Canada had an excellent article on knots. Including suggestions for braid and flurocarbon.

I use the Uni knot for everything. Tieing leaders, Uni Uni when attaching floro leaders directly to braid, tieing lures to line and even tieing the line to the spool.

A great no slip knot never had an issue yet.
