First Carp Outing

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

First Carp Outing

Post by Wader75 »

Greetings All;

Well, I made it out carp fishing for the first time this season. It was a great evening and the carp were hungry. Here are a couple of pictures from the evening. The fish ranged from 8-12lbs.

Cheers

Nice fish. Do you ever eat your catch. If so what is the best way to prepare carp?

Hey 'Bass'aria - corn is my bait of choice

Tsoukan - I have never eaten any of the carp I have caught over the years. I always seem to be letting them go to grow bigger. I know in some European countries carp are considered a fine meal, but I wouldn't know how to prepare them.

CARP DISH

Post by rotary44 »

CARP is a good fish to eat.
The level of the toxic metal is low in CARP because the CARP is not a predator. Of course the size of the fish recomended for eating is below 4 kg. Location of capture, water can be also factors to be taken in consideration.
Best dish of CARP: Remove flakes. Cut the beast in file. Toss the file in corn floor and fry them in a pan. Add salt at you choice. Serve the fried file with polenta and garlic. The meat has bones. But the tase is gorgeous.

Don't forget: CARP is a invasive species in Canada so: kill it or eat it.

And where do ya get the information to support that statement?...Invasive yes....but I've yet to see the MNR support a "no-return" policy on carp...

I find it funny that you have requested what baits were used in the other thread....is that so you can go out and cull some of the invasive population?... :?

In Ontario the MNR considers "Grass Carp" an invasive species and requests that you keep it and call a hotline. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/fishing/threat.html

While it seems that all carp are not native to our waters only the grass carp has been identified as "invasive".

Well I plan on trying some carp fishing this week. I plan on bringing one home to try rotary44 meal sugestion - not sure about the polenta though, might subsitute herb and garlic rotini. The rest will go back to get caught another day.

So this brings another quesiton - I have never caught a carp so are there and best practices for handling them when you want to release them?

For those who think the Comon Carp is an invasive specie, this is the reply I received from the MNR this morning.

The carp (German carp, European carp, leather carp) common in Ontario
waters is not classified as an invasive specie.

Thank you for your enquiry.
