BLACK FLIES

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

The only spary product that I found worked was "Ben's Insect Repellant" that I bought at the drug store...it has 30% DEET...but it's also dependant on how much you sweat and how many times you apply the stuff.....full mesh jacket is good, but a pain when you're having a beer!!

I don't know if this is absolutely true, but I've heard (and noticed) the insufferable demon spawn blackflies have an affinity for the color BLACK.

Sure enough, my black lab would be tormented while the chocolate fella didn't seem to suffer as much. We've noticed people with darker hair seem to draw them over those with lighter / blonde hair.

Still, it won't matter much WHAT color you are wearing or what color hair you have if you are in the thick of blackfly season. They are a bane upon the planet. :x

Wolfe you're right ... we used to mountain bike in the gatineau's a lot (ultra high concentrations of black flies) and we found white or other light coloured clothes really helps ... as does constant rapid travel away ... and lots o' DEET.

If you're wearing a bug suit watch were you put the deet as it can eat holes in plastic.

definitely the white clothing is a plus. I also was told by a guide near New Liskeard that a repellent called Ultrathon ( no not thong) is very good against black flies. It is used by the US forces in jungle and bug infested areas of operation. I can only get this stuff in the US (Walmart). It works very well. It sold for 7 dollars for a small tube (this was 3 years ago)
