I find absolutely nothing exceptional about this fish.....go to this weekends Renegade Bass weigh-in on the Ottawa.....you'll see dozens of fish bigger than that one....

I believe this angler was at least capable of getting the length right, so I accept that it's 22 inches long. River smallies are typically long, lean and athletic, but this one is built on an entirely different frame. Look how thick it is. The base of the tail is about twice as thick as you'd expect. So if a normal 22" smallie would weigh five or six pounds, it is unreasonable to suggest that this one topped seven pounds? If the Renegade boys catch "dozens" of bigger smallies this weekend, I'll eat my favorite fishing cap.
Sparky, here's a photo for ya, this fish was 22.5 inches, can ya guess its weight?
Uncle Jack is going to be so proud that the 5 lbs Smallmouth he caught three years ago, ACTUALLY weighed 13 lbs. (give or take- I'll wait for sparky's estimate)
13 lbs?!?!? Holy Crap! call the newspaper, That beats the old record of
12lbs 6 1/2 ounces!
I just found this photo of the guy having a good ol' heart to heart with the "record" Bass. It was taken later that evening, Both had been drinking heavily and were both bragging about who kicked who's butt!

Give up Sparky,,, Its a 5 lbs Smallmouth!
I don't know how I got cast as a believer in this story. I don't think it's a record of any kind. But I am willing to believe it's more than a routine catch. Look at the picture. The fish IS uncommonly thick. It could easily weigh a couple of pounds more than Uncle Jack's five-pounder, which is built more like the smallies we're used to seeing.
I would say uncle Jacks fish and the fella(world record holder)from the Arnprior's fish are quite similar in size........only difference is uncle Jacks fingers are more freakishly larger than the guy from the prior
You've been cast as a believer because you KEEP describing it as a "more than routine catch", "Uncommonly thick","an eight pound smallie is a geuine rarity" need I go further?
I think it is a record... the worm dunkers of the prior club record I'll agree that it is a "bigger" fish for the river, but nothing more nothing less... I think the story the paper should've gone after is "how will you make that rubber boot edible"?? Front page too, horrible!

This thread has been just too funny!
I'm a goin' fishin', mama's goin' fishin' and my baby's goin fishin' too.
I think enough has been said about this clown!! I think that's exactly what he was hoping, for everybody to talk about him.
Yes I agree for some of us this might look like a huge fish, but I still say that it isn't that much over 5lbs. But a 5lbs smallie for me is a big fish. But we can also see that the picture was not well taken at all.
First the big fingers being close to the tail sure makes that tail look very ordinary.
At work everybody knows that I am a fishing nut. At least 15 people came up to me and said "Did you see the size of that fish??? " Not one of them had any idea what a big smallie should look like. So he is sure getting talked about a lot.
I think that because he keeps eating 12lbs bass that the mercury level has definetly damaged his brain beyond repairs.
Saw that article on the smallie, a bit of an illusion with pushing the fiush forward to the camera( I have a fishing bud who does the same hahahah) I agree it was probably around a 5 pounder but either this guy who caught it had a few too many wobblies or he was in the sun too long that day. A buck I was lucky enough to harvest last year had a 27 inch neck girth and I see him everyday on the wall when I get home. I can't imagine a fish with a girth smaller by 3 inches...
What bothers me is that everyone who believes this story will now head to the Madawaska River to try thier luck ..
I dont believe it was a 12lb Bass, simply because of the way he measured it...
They cut the fish first, then later having realized it might be a record, they took the guts and put them on the scale, and the head and everything else.. I should have been weight the moment it was cought, and with a proper scale, and with witnesses nearby.
Yes I think this guy just wants publicity .. He looks like a crook too
