Good pike water

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Good pike water

Post by Esox_Lucius »

Brand spanking new member here!
Please be gentle.

Buddy & I wanna go for pike this weekend.
Got a 12 ft aluminum with a 9.9 but drive a 2wd pick-up (so rough road access is out of the question).
Can anybody kindly point me in the direction of some good pike fishing.
Don't mind driving a couple of hours to get there either (QC. or ON). Looking for somewhere away from the crowds.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hey Esox,

Welcome to the site. Are you looking for bigger pike or numbers of pike ? Unfortunately there arent a lot of different choices for good pike water around the area.

Especially later in the year, I think you have the best chance at bigger pike on the Ottawa River. There's always the chance for a musky as well. Arnprior and Fitzroy Harbour launches are good choices, but Im pretty sure a good number can be caught in Shirley's Bay. Just keep an eye on the winds if you are headed to the Ottawa.

Almost every largemouth bass lake has a good number of hammerhandle pike ready to break off flippin jigs or jerkbaits. Mississippi Lake comes to mind right away, and you always have a chance at a nice bass. The only thing about these lakes is that most of these pike will be 3 lbs and under.

Hope this helps a bit.

Fox.

This time of year you will not have much luck with larger Pike but there are a lot of options.

As mentioned the Ottawa River is a good choice. Muskrat Lake up at Cobden is not too busy. Calabogie Lake is not too busy. Big Gull Lake is a good one to hit. Lake Kashawakamak has a good Pike population.

In general stay away from the Rideau system as there are Muskies in there which limits the Pike population.

Second vote for Calabogie Lake on the Grassy Bay side. :D

Good pike water

Thanks for the prompt and informative responses folks. :D
Was really looking for quality over quantity in this case (shoulda specified).
I've fished the Ottawa & Mississippi rivers, lake included, on more than one occasion, so I've kinda written those off for right now.
Never really gave much thought to Calabogie lake to tell the truth.
Did some ice fishing there a couple of times without much luck but I guess that shouldn't be enough reason for me to give up on it.
Big Gull Lake eh?
Anyplace in particular on the lake you'd reccomend?

I noticed nobody mentioned any places on the Quebec side.
Anybody have any info. in that regard?

Hey EL,

Quality over quantity is what makes pike fishing in this area of the province tricky. These are just my recommendations, but if you are looking for big pike you want to look for water that

1) Stays cool enough in the summer - and that usually means deeper water on a lake that doesnt stratify. Big pike need cool water and oxygen -- most of the lakes around this area develop a thermocline around 15 feet in the summer with oxygen PPM dropping to unacceptable levels underneath. This is why the Ottawa River and St Lawrence are good choices - the current keeps the waters mixed, and they are cool enough for big pike. I think its pretty rare to find a large ( > 8 lb) pike in 70 + F waters. Of course there always are exceptions -- we used to catch nice pike in the 10 -15 lb range in Northern Ontario in cool but sunny days in June/July by scanning the backbays on sunny days looking for them sunning.

and more importantly

2) Soft Finned forage base. Good populations of fish like Mooneye/Goldeye, suckers, cisco, smelt. It seems that if the lake doesnt have a good population of these fish in the 1-2 pound range then the size of the pike in the system seems to be much bigger. Pike that have to feed on sunfish and perch dont seem to attain the same sizes.

Im not sure about Big Gull pike fishing - never fished that area at all. Similarly for Quebec, although I would guess that across the river up around Mackay/Rolphton there mioght be some decent pike water.

Calabogie Lake's Grassy Bay has pike - but again they seemed to me to be very similar to the pike on the mississippi system. Lure theiving little snot rockets :) Pike like that make me nostalgic for the days of pike fishing in Northern Ontario. Personally, I find the bass fishing in the Ottawa area a decent substitute though - dont really chase the pike around here.

Hope you find something.

Hey Esox (Pittyless waterwolf in latin),

Try Codben (Muskat) Lake next to Hwy 17 between Renfrew and Pembroke.

The lake is deep with lots of forage and other species. The warm water temperature may pose a problem as the big guys like the cool temps.

Try trolling with some Jet or Dippy Divers to get down deep enough. The lake also has a good supply of smelt, bass, walleye and lake trout.

There is a great boat launch in Cobden, but as such there is likely to be some boat traffic this weekend. Its tough to suggest a good lake with good access and no crowds.

Best of luck

Hey Esox

I would suggest the Ottawa for obvious reasons, less travel time means more fishing time. There are lots of good pike spots. I would suggest putting in at Quyon and trolling the Quebec side towards Ottawa. Up river is good as well but it is only a short distance to the dam and Tim Hortons Camp. This area of the river has lots of big Pike and nice big weed beds. Troll along and stop and cast in promising looking areas. Trolling in here will also produce some nice walleye and bass.

Muskrat lake is also good for pike!
