Following up on Big Jim's comments from NASA research....I came across this article yesterday refuting NASA's claim that the year 1998 was the warmest year on record. It seems a fellow by the name of Stephen McIntyre (from Toronto) went back through the mathematical computations and found some errors. The warmest year on record is still the early 1930s (the dust bowl era). I'm sure they had the feeling they were entering global warming back then too!
Here's the article: http://www.thestar.com/News/article/246027
Always check your math and be sceptical about what you hear regarding this subject that has gone political now!

GLOBAL WARMING
I've been really skeptical about this issue. Years ago Reader Digest had an
article about it, where in the author made the comment that if there is global
warming, the increase in temperature would increase the humidity levels and actually cause MORE snow in colder regions like the polar ice caps.
So one group of scientists say the ice caps will melt, another says they'll increase. My conclusion: Scientists have their own agenda, and manipulate
the data for their own funding.
In otherwords: Pray daily, work hard and fish every chance you get!!

Hype, hokem and razzmatazz.

Lots of good stuff on there. Read more than one article.
Read both sides of the story.
Come up with YOUR OWN conclusion.

Science is not "debunked", "junked" or proven wrong by data of one study, dissenting scientists, or what not. In science conclusions are drawn from a body of evidence. Not all of the information has to line up for a conclusion to be drawn. Rather it is the shear amount of evidence and the quality of the evidence that allows a majority of scientists to conclude that global warming is a distinct probability. To state that these scientists are manipulating data to increase funding shows a degree of ignorance about the whole process of funding and what the scientific process is all about.

Global Warming....
There are as many facts for as there is against..actually the against seem to be more compelling....
But consider this when choosing what side of the fence you decide to fall on.
Many of todays threories regarding any type of world wide matter appears to be assumption at best. There are people that are pro this and con that.
The sad thing is that in many cases eithier side is structured and supported by a corporate value in which uses it own brand of propaganda to levarage thier opinion to the masses in order to drive up a global niche market. GLOBAL is the key word here...it effects every one and therefore crackpot PANIC theories have (like Terrorism) a greater earning potenial....Its true.
More true is that if we are concerned about our planet lets look at what we know for certain...
The world wide population has risen expodentailly......at the current rate, we humans, as a species well have created a situation were food is almost impossible to get...in some places its already a reality. We have litterly eaten ourselves out of house and home.
Fresh water........anyone.....sure...if you have it...and ours is being drained away slowly but surely by our neighbors to the south....ask mexican farmers about thier complex irregation systems that used to work so well in the desert climate? The U.S. has all but RE-Routed the water supply for thier own needs....Thats just sad.
RAin forests massacre....This is a beauty...it supplies like 80% of our air that we breath, and we cut areas as big as ottawa down daily! Oh don't forget the species of animals we wipe out...thats another good one....We as humans think our conservation efforts are great ( here in north america, were not to bad, good actually) But we are responsible for actually eliminating entire species of animal that have been around for hundreds of years...what the F*^$ !!!
And the best one yet....Forget being hit by a huge asteroid, which is prone to happen anytime now, it did before right....We actually have Bombs made by our hands that can eliminate human kind in seconds. Not years, months or days, Seconds.
With all the sh%t that is going on world wide today, we blatently and stupidly all turn a blind eye to the issues that are here and now. We choose to enrole our worries towards matters we don't even know are credible.
Maybe we should fix all the garbage that is going on this second so we have something like GLOBAL WARMING to complain about 100 years from now.....Because at this rate..all the prementioned material well ceratinly wipe us out before our man made microwave cooks us alive!

Or the Y2K computer scare,
the acid rain scare
planet running out of food scare
planet running out of water scare
running out of gasoline scare
These same people are always trying to scare the pants off us for some reason, and it seems the more they are proven wrong the more desperate they are to come up with annother scare tactic

I believe the original Q was along teh lines of 'warming planet, effect on fishing'. whatever the underlying cause, it's warming up. For the species that we love that are at the northern end of their ranges (think bass in S. Ont, walleye in N. Ont) things will get better, better growth, better survival, more fish. Of course, coldwater fish won't do as well in the south, but still may benefit from longer growing season. I think the mix of species will change as fish from the south invade the Great Lakes. It may be different from today but it will still be fishing and there will still be fish, who could ask for anything more?

When things change, people want to know why. Sometimes it is just as simple as that is the way the cycle is or by something that is being done. Sure the earth is being damaged by our exploding population. To provide shelter and food that we take for granted is at a very sensitive situation. We have to develope larger quantities of food on less and less land. This is not always easy to try and develope varieties of foods that grow in less then ideal situations and is quite a challange. These challenges have been met before with a whole lot less technology then we have today and if everyone does their part in being aware and by reducing, reusing and recycling who know maybe things won't be as bad as we thought for future generations. People want an instant fix or an instant answer but I really don't think everything can be fixed as quickly or as easily as we would like it to be. I am certainly not an expert by I say where is the harm in fishing in short sleeves until January. Sounds perfect to me.
